2014 Montrose

By Chateau Montrose

2014 Montrose from Château Montrose, Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux

The 2014 vintage in Bordeaux was a testament to the resilience of its vineyards and the savoir-faire of its vintners. The year began with unpredictable weather, which led to understandable trepidation amongst winemakers. However, as if by providence, the season turned just in time to present a memorable vintage, particularly within the boundaries of Saint-Estèphe. The Montrose from Château Montrose, without a doubt, encapsulates this triumph over adversity.

Merlot Mastery and the Marvels of Montrose

The Montrose is noteworthy for its precision and balance. A splendidly proportionate blend has allowed the Merlot to express a plumper, more generous fruit profile than one usually associates with this esteemed estate. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides a firm backbone, ensuring longevity and structure. This vintage excels in demonstrating mulberry and blackcurrant nuances, caressed by whispers of truffle and damp earth—a symphony led by the meticulous vinification process at Château Montrose.

A Vintage For The Connoisseur's Portfolio

Investors with a discerning palate will find solace and excitement in the 2014 Montrose. The grace with which it carries its complexity is nothing short of admirable—it is a wine that glides across the palate with aristocratic dignity yet wears its depth with remarkable humility. Its aging potential is laudably assured, earmarking it as a prudent addition to an oenophile’s assemblage.

Ultimately, the rebirth of nature post-hiccups of early 2014 found its champion in the grapes of Château Montrose. For those who invest emotionally as they do financially in their wines, the 2014 Montrose will prove itself both a bastion of Saint-Estèphe's formidable reputation and a poignant reminder of Bordeaux's capacity for elegance under pressure.

Tasted twice in Bordeaux in the early part of 2017, the 2014 Montrose replicated its showing at the property as part of the vertical in September 2016. It has that exquisite blackberry, cedar and blood orange scented nose that feels so effervescent even at this early stage. The palate is beautifully balanced with crisp, tensile black fruit, filigree tannin, perhaps in recent months developing a little more spiciness on the finish. It is just a beautiful, regal and complete Montrose that will give decades of drinking pleasure. Tasted February 2017.
