2007 Beychevelle
By Chateau Beychevelle
2007 Beychevelle from Chateau Beychevelle, St-Julien, Bordeaux
The 2007 vintage in Bordeaux presented a myriad of challenges, resulting in a test of mettle for the vignerons of this esteemed region. Yet, it is precisely through such adversity that the careful stewardship of Chateau Beychevelle's regimented vineyards shines, sculpting a wine that speaks resolutely of its pedigree and provenance.
Navigating the Nuances of Nature
The unique climatic conditions of 2007 — marked by an unexpectedly warm April followed by cooler, damp summer months — brought forth a restrained character in the resultant grapes. This unorthodox growing season demanded precision and skill, both of which Chateau Beychevelle has in spades, enabling the production of an admirably balanced claret despite the odds.
The Investment Merits of the 2007 Beychevelle
Investors will find the 2007 Beychevelle intriguing not only for its survival story but also for its matured grace. This is not a vintage that clamours for attention with broad shoulders and ostentatious tannins. Rather, it is an exemplar of finesse, one that has woven intricate layers of dark fruit with notes of cedar and tobacco through more than a decade in bottle.
With tannins that have softened into a stately elegance and a bouquet that conjures up the quintessence of St-Julien terroir — earthy with a hint of graphite — the 2007 Beychevelle is unquestionably one for the cerebral collector. The velvety finish resonates long after the last sip, leaving an undeniable imprint on both palate and memory. It is a testament to resilience and precision winemaking.
The advantage for connoisseurs lies not only in savouring this wine's present harmony but also in recognising its potential longevity. Indeed, the 2007 Beychevelle mirrors the quiet confidence of an old master’s work, unfurling its story with each cherished encounter. As such, it stands as one of those discerning additions to any well-curated investment portfolio.
A Vintage Verdict
The narrative of 2007 from Chateau Beychevelle is one of unexpected triumph over climatic caprice. It serves as both a delight to the enlightened palate and as a wise beacon within an investor's collection. For those devoted to tracing the chronicles of Bordeaux through its variable vintages, acquiring this poised and profound expression ensures not just possession of an admirable wine but also stewardship over a piece of Bordeaux's living history.

Robert Parker Jr - Wine Advocate #188 April 2010
Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Beychevelle has a more vigorous bouquet compared directly against the 2007 Talbot: dusky black fruit, sage and a hint of espresso. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, more mature than I was expecting with a soft but cohesive, meaty/dried blood finish that has a sense of rusticity, ferrous on the aftertaste. Drink now and over the next 10-12 years. Tasted February 2017.
