Legacy Encased in Liquid Gold

The esteem surrounding the 1990 Corton-Charlemagne centers on a growing season that favored the bold and intrepid. The year began with anticipatory promise, a moderate spring giving way to a summer seasoned with ample warmth and scarce rainfall, nurturing the Chardonnay vines to yield fruit of potent concentration. This particular harvest from Domaine Coche-Dury encapsulated the essence of that climatic generosity, weaving it intricately into every sip.

Distinguished Terroir Meets Vintage Virtue

Upon tasting, one is greeted with an olfactory tapestry rich in ripe orchard fruits, underscored by an enigmatic minerality that bespeaks its noble terroir. On the palate, layers unravel to exhibit vibrant citrus tones alchemized with warm brioche nuances, anchored by an exquisitely balanced acidity. The 1990's depth and complexity are testamentary to Domaine Coche-Dury's impeccable vinification techniques combined with Corton-Charlemagne's distinct soil composition.

In terms of wine investment potential, the splendour captured within these bottles serves as a linchpin for portfolios with an eye for longevity and rise in value. It stands shoulder to shoulder with other renowned Burgundian crus but shines brilliantly with its historical 1990 provenance.

The finest white wine I enjoyed in 2019 was a pristinely preserved bottle of Coche-Dury's 1990 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a stunning achievement that soars from the glass with scents of orange oil, Anjou pear and ripe citrus fruit mingled with notions of honeycomb, freshly baked bread, praline and cinnamon. Full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, this is a concentrated, elegantly muscular wine of immense depth and dimension, its ample and layered core of fruit built around racy acids and beautifully rendered dry extract. Fully mature but in no danger of decline, this is one of the greatest bottles I've drunk from Jean-François Coche.
