The 1996 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is an extraordinary wine, and one of the few white Burgundies that fulfills all the promise this vintage showed on rerelease. Unfurling in the glass with scents of mandarin, pear, clear honey, buttery pastry and vanilla pod, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with a layered, tightly wound core, incisive acids and chalky structuring extract. Long and complete, this is a monumental wine from Jean-François Coche, and one that would be fascinating to taste alongside the 1990 and 1999.
