2000 Puligny Montrachet les Enseigneres
By Domaine Coche-Dury
2000 Meursault Goutte d'Or from Domaine des Comtes Lafon, Burgundy, France
In the panorama of Burgundian white wines, the 2000 Meursault Goutte d'Or from Domaine des Comtes Lafon encapsulates an extraordinary alignment of regional mastery and vintage singularity. As one traverses the echelons of fine wine, a resounding reverence for the renowned vineyards of Meursault's Premier Cru is encountered. The year 2000, mirroring the millennial shift, stands as a pivotal point of finesse and anticipation in viticultural circles.
Millennial Marvel: A Testament to Terroir
The hallmark year 2000 brought forth a balanced climate in Burgundy, thus setting the stage for an expression of Chardonnay that captured both robust maturity and refined elegance. The harvest conditions for this year allowed a slow ripening process that granted the resultant wine its laudable complexity and depth.
The Goutte d'Or vineyard, translating to 'Drop of Gold', is no misnomer when discussing this Meursault's lustrous quality; it imbues the 2000 vintage with a compelling density and a regal display of aromatics. There’s an olfactory treasure trove to uncover, where burgeoning honeysuckle meets a delectable mélange of ripe orchard fruits nuanced by toasted almond subtleties.
A Vintage for the Astute Investor
Heralded for their meticulous winegrowing philosophies and exacting standards, Domaine des Comtes Lafon ensures that each vintage carries the estate's signature alongside vintage character. The considered maturation provides a textural dialogue between preserved acidity and mellow oak inflection. With years gently sculpting its profile, the palate now delights with expansive layers of citrus confit, entwined with mineral verve—creating an aftertaste that is admirably persistent.
The convergence of Domaine des Comtes Lafon's distinguished approach with the favourable conditions of the 2000 vintage has yielded an investable commodity; one poised to grace cellars with sustained allure. Herein lies a sublime opportunity for the discerning collector to secure an embodiment of vinous heritage—a liquid reflection of both time and place.
As I consider the broad canvass upon which the 2000 Meursault Goutte d'Or paints its golden brushstrokes, it becomes eminently clear that this wine is one poised to enrapture both palate and portfolio in equal measure—a touchstone for Burgundy connoisseurs, nurtured through adept stewardship and fortuitous seasonal graces.

Probably the weakest, or rather "least compelling" of four Puligny’s tasted from Coche-Dury, the millennial offering does not quite match two previous encounters. Even so, the 2000 Puligny Montrachet les Enseignieres retains that wonderful, minerally nose that is very nicely detailed for what was a difficult vintage with granite, orange rind and hints of acacia emerging from the glass. The palate is well-balanced with a fine line of acidity: hints of ginger and spices enlivening the stony finish. I suspect that other bottles might show a little more pizzazz, but this is still an impressive showing considering the challenges of the vintage.
