2004 Meursault Goutte d'Or from Domaine des Comtes Lafon, Burgundy, France
In the landscape of Burgundian whites, the 2004 vintage of Meursault Goutte d'Or from the esteemed Domaine des Comtes Lafon holds a place akin to a rare jewel in an aficionado's collection. My experience with this particular cuvée has been marked by a series of tastings throughout its evolution; the 2004 iteration was a standout for its poise and complexity.
The Vintage Speaks: A Year of Precision and Elegance
The year 2004 gave us a vintage where elegance took precedence over power. Climatic conditions in Burgundy led to a growing season that presented challenges but ultimately bestowed wines with distinctive attributes. The care lavished upon the vines at Domaine des Comtes Lafon yielded fruit that mirrors the meticulous attention to detail for which this producer is renowned.
The 2004 Meursault Goutte d'Or exhibits a candescent gold hue that whispers tales of refined aging. Upon first nosing, one is greeted by a kaleidoscope of aromas where citrus zest intertwines with white flowers and a subtle undertone of toasted almonds – a nod to its time in oak. With patience, secondary notes of flint and honeycomb emerge, adding depth to an already intricate bouquet.
On the Palate: An Ode to Finesse
A quintessential Meursault in texture, the 2004 Goutte d'Or balances ripe fruit with a backbone of Burgundian minerality. The mid-palate reveals layers reminiscent of orchard fruits drizzled with caramel and intertwined with chalky nuances. The finish is persistent, echoing both the soil of its origin and the impeccable winemaking hand that has guided it to fruition.
For fine wine investors seeking a vintage that represents both pedigree and potential, the 2004 Meursault Goutte d'Or from Domaine des Comtes Lafon is an essential consideration. Its current state reflects a poised balance between youthful exuberance and mature grace – surely a telling sign of excellent longevity for this acclaimed Chardonnay from Burgundy.
In Summary: A Resplendent Investment Opportunity
In summation, this Meursault stands as a testament to its terroir and vintage - it is not merely wine but liquid history encapsulated in a bottle. Discerning collectors would be wise to take notice of this 2004 Goutte d'Or as it continues to ascend to its plateau of maturity; gracing cellars with its presence and offering a bright prospect for both pleasure and investment return.

The 2004 Puligny-Montrachet Enseignieres from Jean-Francois Coche has a surprisingly pale color. The nose is taciturn at first, only reluctantly opening to reveal grass clipping and dandelion scents, a limestone element surfacing and then expanding. The palate is nicely balanced with a Meursault-like, walnut- inspired entry. It is elegant and suave with an understated almond and hazelnut finish that waltzes along. This is very refined and drinking beautifully. Drink now-2025. Tasted November 2013. Here is another raft of wines from the most feted and yet still mysterious Cote de Beaune growers. Jean-Francois Coche’s reds are more elusive than his whites, but they can be astonishing. Importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel. (510) 524-1524
