In the pantheon of fine wines, the name Romanée-Conti is spoken with hushed reverence, and in its constellation of legendary vintages, the 1996 Romanée-Conti from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti shines with a particular incandescence. This vintage carries with it not just the weight of its storied terroir, but also the unique climatic narrative that unfolded in Burgundy during that year.

The Vintage Speaks: Climactic Narrative of '96

The 1996 vintage in Burgundy promised greatness from its onset, with a growing season that commenced in optimism. Amidst factors like a cool spring was followed by a hot, arid summer creating a meticulous balance between acidity and phenolic maturity in the grapes. These weather patterns brought forth a harvest that endowed the 1996 Romanée-Conti with tannins of remarkable finesse and vivacity, characteristics that foreshadowed an exceptional ageing potential. One can posit that it is this taut structure which has underpinned the wine's graceful evolution.

A beacon of complexity, this transcendent brew from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti unfolds in delicate layers – a kaleidoscope of dark cherries, vibrant raspberry nuances, and an ethereal bouquet adorned with hints of rose petals, damp earth, and subtle spices – a true homage to its noble lineage.

An Ode to Terroir and Timelessness

With meticulous nurturing in both vineyard and cellar, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti harnessed the promise of '96, delivering a wine of extraordinary depth and longevity. Now well into its narrative arc as a seasoned treasure of the discerning collector's cellar, the 1996 Romanée-Conti remains the apotheosis of investment-worthy Burgundy.

As I reflect on this magnificent elixir, it becomes clear that it is much more than its sum parts; it encapsulates a particular moment in time, frozen within its ruby depths. For investors seeking not just a bottle but an artefact of viticultural artistry, this vintage stands a testament to the wealth that fine wine can embody – both literally and sensorially.

One might surmise that to savor the 1996 Romanée-Conti from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is to partake in history itself; for this wine doesn’t simply age – it ascends into vinous lore as one of Burgundy's most sublime offerings.

This is among the world's most expensive wines (as far as I know only certain late harvest wines from Germany are more expensive). It has a gorgeously bright dark ruby/purple color and extremely complex aromatics of fresh herbs, Asian spices, creamy cherries, super-ripe blackberries, and vanilla-imbued oak. This superb wine offers a mouthful of silky-textured cherries, blueberries, plums, boysenberries, earth, minerals, and spiced oak. This masterpiece is full-bodied, dense (yet extremely elegant and defined), thickly-textured, and immensely concentrated. Moreover, I sensed this wine was holding a significant amount in reserve!
