Amidst the rolling hills of Burgundy lies an oenophile's jewel: the 2018 Montrachet from Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. Renowned for its age-worthy nectar, this esteemed domaine offers an exemplar of finesse with its 2018 vintage—a year that both challenged and championed the winemakers of Burgundy.
Precision and Patience: The Hallmarks of Investment-Worthy Wine
Marked by a growing season that threw a symphony of climatic pitches, with fluctuating temperatures and bouts of rain, the poise and persistence of the vineyard team at Domaine de la Romanee-Conti triumphed. Their dedication yielded a harvest that sings of precision in viticulture and patience in winemaking—a combination most promising for wine investors looking for virtuosity.
An Exemplary Vintage with a Narrative to Cherish
The 2018 Montrachet is poised to be a touchstone for collectors. With a bouquet redolent of ripe orchard fruits accented by toasted hazelnut and a whispering undercurrent of limestone minerality, it presents an ethereal complexity. On the palate, there is an immediate embrace of sumptuous texture; white peach commingling with sparks of citrus zest and a sustained mineral seam—an ode to its storied terroir.
Wine enthusiasts will appreciate the dance between power and elegance in this vintage; an energetic tension that holds promise for sublime evolution over time. It stands as one of the keystones of investment portfolios, combining pedigree with an exuberant expression reflective of its growing season.
In conclusion, the 2018 Montrachet from Domaine de la Romanee-Conti is a vinous tapestry interwoven with climatic trials and triumphs. It's a collector's centrepiece that pledges to ascend in both grace and value as it matures within the sanctity of the cellar. A judicious acquisition now may yield profound enjoyment and astute returns in years to come; investing in such liquid artistry is a wise consideration indeed.

Scores and tasting notes
Displaying a nose reminiscent of a vine's flower in the springtime (beautifully sweet with hints of cream and spice), the silky-textured Meursault Goutte d'Or exhibits an explosive flavor profile packed with flavors of spices and sweet fruit. This full-bodied wine will age gracefully for 10 years. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. Ratings with a range of scores in parentheses indicate the wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Dominique Lafon, who has run this estate on his own since 1987, feels his '95s are the best set of wines he's made to date. I would ignore this kind of statement from most growers in Burgundy as they are often given to hyperbole, but Lafon walks the walk in addition to talking the talk. His reputation is such that his wines sell-out instantaneously irrespective of what critics might write. Secondly, he's not the type of man who would risk his credibility, nor is he given to immodest boasting. His '95s are outstanding wines that may have better structure than those from previous vintages, and, therefore, may age and evolve more gracefully. He has produced fatter, lusher wines in the past (the '89s for example), but, in general, cellaring hasn't improved them. I believe the '95 will be different.
