2008 Vosne Romanee Aux Reignots from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair

The 2008 Burgundy vintage presented vintners with a myriad of challenges that yielded some unequivocally exceptional wines for the stoic investor and connoisseur alike. Amongst these, the 2008 Vosne Romanee Aux Reignots from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair stands out as a testament to the acuity of Burgundian winemaking.

Terroir and Timeliness: A Vintage Marked by Whims of Weather

Nestled within the heralded confines of Vosne-Romanée, the Aux Reignots lieu-dit benefits immensely from its elevated position just above the legendary La Romanée. The vicissitudes of 2008's growing season – a cool, damp summer followed by an unanticipated glorious September – conspired to create a wine that is enigmatic, evocative of its unique climatic narrative.

The 2008 Vosne Romanee Aux Reignots confronts one's palate with an intricate dance of strength and subtlety. The nose is graced with a panoply of dark ripe cherries, blackcurrants, and a compelling whisper of exotic spice owing to its dignified oak integration. Tannins, which at their youth were firm and unyielding, have now matured into a structure of elegant finesse.

Investment Potential: Patience Rewards the Discerning

For those who seek not only pleasure but also prudence in their investments, the measured ascension to maturity positions this vintage as a lucrative asset. Its limited production, under the stewardship of Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, has conferred upon it an exclusivity that aligns well within fine wine portfolios.

In summary, the 2008 Vosne Romanee Aux Reignots from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is one in which complexity and rarity intertwine. Its evolution through adversity speaks loudly to both its present allure and future promise within the sphere of fine wine investment. For collectors looking towards laying down Burgundies that encapsulate both a storied vintage and esteemed terroir, this wine is undeniably a distinguished selection.

Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2008 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots does not quite possess the same delineation and poise on the nose as the 2007, which comes as some surprise. Touches of cooked meat come through and later an attractive sea spray scent. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded, savory entry. This is quite animally and gamy, the acidity nicely judged with a little chewiness toward the finish. Give this 2-3 more years in the cellar. Tasted June 2015.
