Domaine Dujac Chambertin

2010 Chambertin

By Domaine Dujac

2010 Chambertin from Domaine Dujac, Burgundy, France

In the pantheon of Burgundy's finest offerings, the 2010 Chambertin from Domaine Dujac demands particular attention. As an observer of the region's climatic ballet for decades, this vintage emerged triumphant from a season with initial skepticism. From a year that unravelled slowly, giving us cool spring and an erratic summer, it was the flawlessness of the late ripening period that sculpted its destiny.

Decoding a Vintage: An Investor's Herald

Domaine Dujac's winemaking prowess turned the challenges of 2010 into a vintage of exemplary finesse and structure. Against all odds—and in a fashion reminiscent of the most revered years—the serene conditions of late August through September worked a marvel. It provided optimal balance for grape maturation; capturing Burgundy’s heart with an acidity enlivened by elegant fruit flavours, all while gifting investors with bottles boasting ageing potential par excellence.

Storied Soil and Superior Savoir-faire

Distinctive among Burgundies, the 2010 Chambertin captures a triumvirate of elements. Firstly, the terroir—a tapestry woven with Gevrey-Chambertin's storied soils—imparts depth and complexity. Secondly, Domaine Dujac's savoir-faire ensures meticulous grape handling and astute barrel ageing, linking tradition with vision. Last but not least, this vintage embodies the subtle interplay between fruit and structure that only time will continue to unveil.

An aromatic profiled symphony is presented – dark cherry and violet notes inscribe delicacy atop a manuscript of earthy richness. Minerality whispers through as a leitmotif, striking an accord between potency and poise on the palate.

Indeed, as an esteemed choice for discerning investors, the 2010 Chambertin from Domaine Dujac finds itself increasingly scarce; a confluence of favourable conditions has rendered it one of the beacons amongst Burgundy's illustrious vintages. The sophistry in each bottle—an intricate meld of collector’s ambition with sensorial joy—speaks loudly of an investment not merely for dividends in coin but rich in enological reward as well.

The 2010 Chambertin possesses striking energy and finesse in its dark red fruit, cassis, flowers, licorice and cloves. There is fabulous energy and focus, not to mention marvelous integrity. Readers who can find this wine should not hesitate. It is truly majestic. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040. Dujac fans will be thrilled with these 2010s. They are off the charts. The most difficult thing will no doubt be finding them. Jeremy Seysses reported yields down by 30-50% across the board, although his Morey blanc was down a whopping 90%. The poor flowering and wet summer resulted in loose bunches with a high amount of shot berries. The wines came in at 12 to 12.5% potential alcohol and were lightly chaptalized. Seysses used 80-90% stems for most of the wines, a little less for some, such as the Charmes and Combettes (around 70%) and more for the Chambertin and RSV (both 100%). Unfortunately, the 2010 Morey 1er Cru was too reduced to evaluate, so I will have to wait for another opportunity to taste the wine. I also tasted the entire range of 2009s. I will report on those wines in the April issue. Importers: The Sorting Table, Napa, CA; tel. (415) 491-4724; Martin Scott Wines, Little Neck, NY; tel.
