The Vintage's Voice: A Distinctive Narrative
The 2009 season in Burgundy was marked by a confluence of optimal weather conditions, culminating in wines of particular intensity and aromatic richness. Among these, the 2009 Chambolle Les Fremieres exemplifies the harmony achieved when nature bestows its favour upon skilled vintners. Domaine Leroy, with its storied dedication to biodynamic principles, has created not merely a wine but an ode to the possibilities of terroir.
Precise Elegance, Remarkable Depth
Upon engaging with the 2009 Chambolle Les Fremieres, one immediately notes the depth and purity of its red and dark berry fruit aromas—cherries and blackcurrants entwined with an undercurrent of earthy nuances. The palate unfolds seamlessly, revealing layers of complexity; minerality laces through precise tannic structures while subtle oak nuances provide a scaffold on which this vintage can unfurl its refined elegance.
As suitable for immediate consumption as it is promising for long-term cellaring, this vintage carries both the immediacy of its fruit-forward allure and the promise of graceful evolution. This balanced duality makes the wine a compelling option for discerning wine investors looking to enrich their portfolio with a piece of Burgundy’s lauded 2009 narrative.
Investment-Worthy Artistry in a Bottle
In sum, the 2009 Chambolle Les Fremieres from Domaine Leroy captures a moment in time when climatic serendipity met viticultural mastery. The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fremieres is rich, seductive and incredibly primary, with little in the way of aromatic expressiveness. This is the first wine of these 2009s that is closed in on itself. With time in the glass hints of red cherries and flowers begin to emerge, yet this remains an implosive wine in need of considerable cellaring. The depth of the fruit and the elegance of the tannins are impossible to miss, but this multi-dimensional wine begs for patience. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034. This was my first opportunity to taste the 2009s from Domaine Leroy in bottle. Lalou Bize-Leroy was among the first, if not the first, to bottle her 2009s, so she naturally wanted to give the wines some time to recover before showing them. The wines are stunning. Readers who have an opportunity to taste them should not hesitate. As always, the style is one of textural richness and depth, but the2009s appear to have excellent underlying material as well. The attention to every detail at the Domaine is quite evident in these thrilling wines. My visit ended with a sample of the 2010 Chambertin from barrel. Why not go straight to the top? If that wine is representative of the year, Leroy fans will have another superb vintage to look forward to, although yields will be lower than the already minuscule production.
