By Mommessin
1985 Clos de Tart from Mommessin, Grand Cru, Burgundy, France
The lineage of Burgundian excellence is vividly represented in the remarkable 1985 Clos de Tart from Mommessin; a vintage that harbors an extraordinary conjunction of climatic tenacity and vinicultural artistry. This particular year was noted for an early flowering, a moderate summer, and an exceptionally fine end to the growing season; these conditions coalesced to create a wine that not only embodies the quintessence of its terroir but also exhibits a splendid maturation profile.
Decoding an Iconic Vintage
The landscape of Burgundy is punctuated with myriad esteemed producers, yet the 1985 vintage of Clos de Tart distinctly asserts itself with a finesse that elevates it as one of the pivotal expressions from this storied appellation. The venerable hands at Mommessin mastered the alchemy between nature and nurture, presenting a wine of deep complexity and extraordinary longevity.
Time's Patina on Grand Cru Elegance
With decades to unfurl its intricate tapestry of traits, the 1985 Clos de Tart has transcended beyond its primary vivacity into a realm of sophisticated composure. Garnet-hued with whispers of tawny at the meniscus, it reveals a bouquet where wilted rose petals, leather-bound books, and a symphony of forest floor allure enchant the olfactory senses. On the palate, a harmonious interplay of preserved red fruits, sous bois, and ethereal minerality are woven seamlessly with silken tannins that betray the generous vintage whence it hailed.
The discreet power and stunning vitality make this Grand Cru offering a compelling piece for wine investment connoisseurs; its ability to sustain and evolve makes it a testament to the profundity that the 1985 Burgundian vintages can reach under optimal cellaring conditions.
Embarking on a Sensorial Odyssey
The narrative of the 1985 Clos de Tart is one of graceful evolution—a tome penned in liquid form by the seasoned savants at Mommessin. Unwavering in structure yet endlessly refined in every sensory aspect, this Grand Cru selection beckons investors with not just its pedigree, but its provenance of form. For patrons seeking an asset imbued with history's depth and tomorrow's potential, this wine stands as an immutable standard—astutely balancing collectability with consummate character. Thus concludes our traverse through time and terroir; another chapter impeccably embodied in this age-worthy tapestry from Burgundy.

Preceding the era and rejuvenation under Sylvain Pitiot, the 1985 Clos de Tart has always been one of the best vintages from the era. It has an unexpectedly youthful bouquet that is not complex vis-a-vis recent vintages, but contains vivacious red currant and raspberry fruit undiminished by the passing years, tinged with iodine and violet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite sturdy tannins that lend this an atypically masculine personality for a 1985. This is unapologetically “old-school” Burgundy – there is nothing wrong with that, and I can imagine it cruising for another decade at least. Drink now-2020+. Tasted November 2013.
