1997 Costa Russi
By Gaja
1997 Costa Russi from Gaja, Langhe, Italy
In the realm of fine wines from Italy, the 1997 Costa Russi from Gaja stands as a beacon of that significant year. Angelo Gaja's vision, innovation, and intuition for what Barbaresco could be are majestically brought to life in this unforgettably opulent vintage.
1997—A Vintage Marked by Intensity
The climatic conditions of 1997 led to an exceptional harvest in Barbaresco. The year began with a mild winter, followed by a dry, hot summer. This prolonged warm period created ideal conditions for the ripening of Nebbiolo grapes. The result? A vintage brimming with aggressive power yet subtle notes of elegance—a true testament to Gaja’s inventive wine-making skills.
Unforgettable Brilliance in Each Sip
The 1997 Costa Russi shifts beautifully between profound intensity and delicate finesse—an embodiment of the dialectic between power and elegance inherent to Barbaresco wines. Instantly recognizable aromas of ripe cherries steeped in spices engulf you at first sniff, hinting at the coming symphony of flavors. On the palate, it showcases its muscular structure with thick layers of dark fruit; however, it is in its gentle unraveling where you appreciate the hints of tobacco, truffle, and licorice playing supporting roles. Concluding on an impressive last note—one that lingers thoughtfully long after each sip—this wine leaves an indelible stamp on your memory.
A Staple in Any Fine Wine Portfolio
Wine collectors seeking substantial returns on investments view the 1997 vintage Costa Russi as one of the stalwarts. Its ability to age gracefully and continue to reveal new nuances, paired with its increasingly scarce availability, suggests a promising prospect for wine investors.
The 1997 Costa Russi from Gaja is a lyrical testament to the potential of Barbaresco and a nod to the skill and foresight of Angelo Gaja, making it one of the most appealing fine wines from Italy for wine lovers and investors alike.

The opaque ruby/purple-colored 1997 Costa Russi (10,000 bottles produced) displays a striking bouquet of blackberry and cherry fruit intermixed with espresso and wood scents. Typically the most internationally-styled Gaja offering, the 1997 comes across as a Nebbiolo on steroids. Full-bodied, gorgeously pure and symmetrical, it should be at its best between 2002-2025. A genius for sure, Angelo Gaja can not be faulted for what he puts in the bottle. This work of art is worth every cent it will fetch. Importer: Paterno Imports, Lake Bluff, IL; tel. (847) 604-89000
