The star of Chapoutier's white Hermitage lineup this year is the 2019 Ermitage l'Ermite Blanc, which manages to marry tremendous ripeness and power with structural ribs of granite. Hints of flamed citrus zest appear on the nose alongside pear, melon and pineapple shadings, while the medium to full-bodied palate is open and generous, yet supported and shaped by tremendous underlying dry extract and what Michel Chapoutier describes as "noble bitterness." Notes of crushed stone and citrus zest linger endlessly on the finish, which positively reverberates with low-key energy that's in perfect harmony with the richness and opulence on display. This is delicious now, but I suspect it will be better—like many top white Hermitages—in 10-15 years.
