The 2009 vintage of Louis-Roederer’s prestige cuvee, Cristal, has been released.
With merchants offering the vintage for around £549 per case of six, it currently sits at the same level as the 2006 and 2007.
There are no recent critic tasting notes available for the wine, although in 2010 Antonio Gallini gave it 95-96 points, lauding its “superb length and exceptional overall balance”, noting that it “literally shimmers on the palate”.
According to Liv-ex, leading Champagne houses’ most recent three or four vintages are usually available at a similar level, while older vintages, from 2002 or earlier, command higher prices, appreciating in value as supplies begin to diminish.
Cristal vintages show a similar trend. While the 2009 currently sits alongside 2006 and 2007 its older siblings have all gained value since release. As the table above indicates, 1999 Cristal price traded at £920 per 12 in May 2005, and last traded at £1,960 per 12, marking an increase of 113%.
As Liv-ex notes, those seeking Champagne for the years ahead may well see value in buying early.
