Seasonal Symphony: Understanding 2004 in Pauillac

The growing season of 2004 in Pauillac was marked by a sort of composed equilibrium after the torrid heat of 2003. The vines, rested and recovered from the previous year’s extremes, embarked on their annual growth cycle with measured enthusiasm. A temperate summer allowed for gradual ripening, ensuring that the grapes for the 2004 Forts de Latour developed their intricate bouquet while preserving a rousing freshness.

Crafting Elegance: The Winemaker’s Dedication

In this particular year, meticulous vineyard management and astute decision-making during harvest were pivotal to achieving balance. The 2004 vintage finds its identity in its structure—firm and assertive without being brash. There is a grace to the tannins, a reflection of gentle extraction and attentive oak maturation. On the palate, one discovers layers of blackcurrant, pencil shavings, and a whisper of tobacco—a combination that signals depth without forgoing the quintessential elegance that aficionados associate with Pauillac’s pedigree.

Strategic Selection: An Asset for Connoisseurs

To include the 2004 Forts de Latour in one's investment portfolio would not just signify ownership of a bottle from one of Bordeaux’s iconic estates; it exemplifies an intimate grasp of vintage variation—of knowing when climate and human touch converge to create something subtly unique.

For investors and collectors intrigued by the understated charm of Bordeaux wines that do not shout but rather converse with finesse, adding the 2004 Forts de Latour would denote both sagacity and aesthetic appreciation—one would be wise to regard it as a prudent addition to any well-cultivated selection.

Verdict: The Communicative 2004 Vintage

The 2004 Forts de Latour is not merely an echo of Chateau Latour’s grand vin but rather a resonant voice in its own right. It’s a vintage that tells of adaptation and precision in winemaking amidst contrastive seasons—a wine implicitly woven into both an investor’s calculated tapestry and a connoisseur's discerning palate.

A very dark colour. A dark broody nose, quite earthy and damson and even sloes. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, blackberries, a touch of soy, a slight earthiness on the finish. Almost savoury on the off-dry finish. Needs time to mellow out, much more unresolved than the '02 but I would suggest a better long-term prospect. Drink 2013-2025. Tasted September 2008.

The estate's second wine continues to go from strength to strength. The 2004 Forts de Latour (includes 75% Cabernet Sauvignon) reveals a deep ruby/purple hue, classic evolved cedary, lead pencil, and cassis characteristics, medium body, beautiful sweetness of fruit, and a more forward, evolved character than its big sibling. Enjoy it over the next 15+ years. Also tasted: 2004 Pauillac (87; $38.00)
