2004 Pontet Canet
By Chateau Pontet Canet
2004 Pontet Canet from Chateau Pontet Canet, Pauillac, Bordeaux
The 2004 vintage in Bordeaux was one that expertly demonstrates the virtue of patience. It languished for years as a sleeper, only to awaken as a stunning embodiment of Pauillac's finesse. The 2004 Pontet Canet from Chateau Pontet Canet is a striking exemplar of this transformation, revealing layers of complexity that have unfurled gracefully with age.
A Vintage Defined by Elegance and Balance
Initially overshadowed by the more opulent vintages that preceded it, the 2004 Pontet Canet has undergone a remarkable evolution. It showcases how structured tannins and vibrant acidity, properly nurtured, can yield exquisite results. In comparison to its more illustrious siblings, this vintage captivates with subtlety rather than sheer power—a testament to the deft hand of winemaking at Chateau Pontet Canet.
The Epitome of Nuanced Terroir Expression
The temperate climatic conditions of 2004 led to a growing season that was both steady and free of extremes. For the astute investor, this translated into a wine whose value has discreetly escalated over time. The 2004 vintage is an intriguing investment proposition with its compelling display of Pauillac's terroir. Lead pencil shavings intertwine with mature cassis notes and a whisper of cedar and tobacco, presenting a symphony that resonates well beyond its first sip.
In a market where discerning collectors seek wines with proven longevity, the 2004 Pontet Canet stands as an enlightened choice. Its steady ascent in appreciation mirrors the very essence of Bordeaux's timeless allure—including a fantastic potential for further maturation and complexity.
In Summary: An Outsanding Vintage for the Shrewd Investor
With every passing year, the 2004 Pontet Canet elucidates why patience is such a prized virtue in both wine enjoyment and investment. For those who seek out wines that offer not just pleasure but also a wise investment option, this particular vintage stands out as an intelligent choice—one that will continue to reward both palate and portfolio alike.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index’s Pontet-Canet dinner at The Ledbury. The 2004 has a very expressive nose, especially when compared to the 2005 at this stage. Lifted scents of blackberry, cedar and mint with something just a little decadent in the background: orange essence perhaps, vanilla pod. The palate is very well balanced though the tannins are not quite as fine as say the 2006 with just a touch of austerity towards the long finish. This will drink long before the 2005. Tasted February 2011.

Tasted at the Pontet-Canet vertical in London, it seems clear that the 2004 Château Pontet-Canet is predestined to always fall under the shadow of the 2005. Don't overlook this gem. The bouquet delivers pure blackberry, pencil lead and tobacco notes that are more generous than the 2005 at the moment—open for business, you might say. There is an element of dried herbs here, a hint of black tar. The palate is medium-bodied and quite sturdy in the mouth, the tannins perhaps "abrasive" when juxtaposed against the 2005, however they are couched in unexpectedly intense earthy black fruit that frame a tannic finish. If you hanker for a sumptuous Pontet-Canet, then opt for 2003 or 2009, but if your predilection is for a more "classic" Pauillac, then 2004 Pontet-Canet fits the bill. Undoubtedly a great wine from Alfred Tesseron for the vintage, I would start, broaching bottles now but keep a stash back for 4-5 years' time when those tannins have softened. Tasted February 2016.

Firm and fresh with currant bush and sweet tobacco character that turns to cigar box. Medium-to-full body with a racy edge to it. Drink or hold.

Backward and powerful for the vintage, this blue/purple-colored 2004 exhibits classic creme de cassis, smoke, incense, and spring flower characteristics. Medium to full-bodied, dense, and excruciatingly tannic, this impressively endowed Pauillac is built for the long haul. However, patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025+.
