2001 Haut Brion
By Chateau Haut Brion
2001 Haut Brion from Chateau Haut Brion, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux
The millennium had barely dawned when the 2001 Haut Brion vintage was whispered from the seasoned barriques within the storied cellars of Chateau Haut Brion. This Pessac-Leognan jewel stands as a witness to climatic caprice, settling into a startling exemplar of the brilliance that Bordeaux can yield, despite whimsical weather patterns.
Distinct Character of the Vintage
Distinguishing itself amongst its chronological brethren, the 2001 Haut Brion brandishes an aromatic tapestry woven with precision and nuances distinct to a season characterized by meteorological mercy. Unlike its torrid predecessor, this vintage revelled in a temperate growing season that coaxed complexity rather than sheer power from its grapes.
A tasting unveils a cornucopia of sensory delights: graphite interlaced with swaths of smoke and leather amidst a blackcurrant core. Over time, these initial brusque notes have softened into a harmonious blend reminiscent of an autumnal forest floor sprinkled with truffles. Tannins, ever-present but never obtrusive, assert their longevity, promising further evolution for investors and drinkers alike who have patiently cellared this gem.
Investment Potential
The 2001 Haut Brion emerges as one of the more cerebral investments in the fine wine firmament; it captures the imagination with its enigmatic provenance and sophisticated palate profile. Astute collectors understand that such vintages present rare opportunities to diversify portfolios with wines marked not only by excellence but also uniqueness juxta-posed against Bordeaux's more celebrated years.
In conclusion, borne of a year where nature's equanimity allowed for meticulous expression of terroir, the 2001 Haut Brion is imbued with traits that resonate deeply with connoisseurs and investors alike. It stands as a testament to viticultural endurance and an archetype of investment-worthy wine. Rarely does one encounter a vintage at such a poised intersection of maturation and potential—a veritable polysensory ledger assuring the palate while seducing the prudent investor.

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year On horizontal. This has a very elegant bouquet with blackberry, briary, potter's kiln and bacon fat with fine delineation and lift. The palate is medium-bodied with great freshness on the entry, very good acidity with red-berried fruit interlaced with cedar, graphite and leather. Very good depth, very feminine and focused with ample freshness on the finish that seems to have 'filled out' in recent years. Excellent. Tasted March 2011.

aut-Brion's 2001, which was bottled late (the end of September, 2003), possesses an unmistakable nobility as well as a burgeoning complexity. Plum/purple to the rim, this blend of 52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc is playing it close to the vest, having closed down considerably after bottling. Nevertheless, it reveals pure notes of sweet and sour cherries, black currants, licorice, smoke, and crushed stones. Medium-bodied with excellent purity, firm tannin, and an angular, structured finish, it requires 5-7 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020+.
