1982 L'Evangile from Chateau L'Evangile, Pomerol, Bordeaux

The 1982 L'Evangile is a testament to the vintner's art, weaving into its very fabric the ric tapestry of the storied Pomerol terroir. It is a vintage that encapsulates the serendipity of climatic harmony and human expertise. For those with an eye for wine investments, this particular offering from Chateau L'Evangile is embedded with history and poised for contemplation.

A Vintage Steeped in Distinction

The year 1982 remains enshrined as one of Bordeaux's quintessential vintages, characterised by optimally long, dry growing conditions that coaxed Pomerol’s Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes into sublime expression. The result within each bottle of 1982 L'Evangile is nothing short of ethereal—a ballet of matured tannins and velvety fruit that pirouettes upon the palate.

The wine exhibits its pedigree through a transcendent blend that caresses with ripe plum notes, truffled earthiness, and an elegant hint of violet. Time has chiselled its edges into rounded contours that seduce the tongue with dark chocolate whispers and leather, culminating in a finish as seamless as it is lasting.

Connoisseurship and Investment Enthusiasm

This 1982 vintage embodies the exceptional potential for longevity, a pinnacle year where nature conspired to benefit both connoisseur and investor alike. Savvy collectors will appreciate both its provenance from Chateau L'Evangile and its current state of graceful ascension—attributes that solidify it as not merely a drink but an asset worthy of portfolio inclusion.

While past decades have burnished its glory, this wine remains pivoted on a fulcrum of resilience. It’s a grand affirmation of Pomerol's virtues with every uncorking—a meticulous fusion of heritage and foresight that speaks effusively to those who grasp wine’s capacity to articulate both time and place.

In conclusion, the 1982 L'Evangile manifests as more than a singular pleasure; it is an emblematic entrant in one's cellar, persistently radiating the splendour of Bordeaux’s golden vintage for those meticulous enough to discern its worth in both sensory and investment terms.

A blockbuster, dark plum/garnet-colored wine, the 1982 L'Evangile reveals a decadent, extravagantly rich nose of caramelized fruit, plum, licorice, smoked meats, and toffee. This opulent, full-bodied Pomerol caresses the palate with layers and layers of glycerin and fruit. The tannin is barely noticeable in this massive, rich, gorgeous effort. The complexity of the nose alone is worth a special admission price. It is close to full maturity, and is capable of lasting another 20-25 years. Release price: ($210.00/case)

Tasted at Pebbles/Zachy's 1982 dinner in Hong Kong. I have never been totally convinced about the pedigree of the 1982 L'Evangile, especially having tasted the superior 1989 not long before this. The nose is reticent despite vigorous coaxing and is out-performed by the l'Arrosee '82 tasted alongside. It does come out of its shell a little with time, with scents of blackberry pastille, wild heather and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm backbone, perhaps a little rustic compared to its peers, old-fashioned and yet full of charm. The finish is harmonious with a crisp, slightly pointed finish that needs a little more persistency. This is very fine, but not great L'Evangile. Tasted November 2012.
