2000 L'Evangile from Chateau L'Evangile, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France
In the annals of Bordeaux's storied winemaking history, the 2000 L'Evangile from Chateau L'Evangile commands a special reverence amongst connoisseurs and investors alike. The millennium vintage in Pomerol unveiled an unparalleled expression of the estate’s virtue, yielding a wine that distinctly reflects the extraordinary conditions of that year.
A Millennial Marvel: The 2000 Veneration
The dawn of the new century brought with it a vintage in Bordeaux that struck an exquisite balance between ripeness and structure, and nowhere was this alchemy more evident than in Pomerol. The 2000 L'Evangile is a testament to this equilibrium, brandishing an architecture of both power and precision that has allowed it to age gracefully while retaining the plumpness of its youth.
Exemplary Terroir Expression
The hallmark of the 2000 vintage is its immediate appeal combined with an undercurrent of complexity that has unfolded over time. At first glance, the wine beguiles with its lavish layers of dark fruit – notably blackberries and plums – yet beneath this luxurious veneer lie subtler soil-inflected notes; truffles and wet earth intermingling with spice from expertly integrated oak.
Despite two decades of evolution, the tannins remain supple yet assertive, showcasing Chateau L'Evangile's renowned terroir. Remarkably consistent climatic conditions during the growing season permitted a meticulous harvest, ensuring each berry contributed to the vintage's profound depth and enduring character.
Cultivating Excellence for Investors
The 2000 L'Evangile has not only enraptured palates but also affirmed its stature as a compelling prospect for fine wine investors. As it traverses through its maturity peak, it remains one of the jewels in Pomerol's vinous crown, carrying with it not just the weight of an exceptional vintage but also the promise of continued acclaim in the cellars of those astute enough to appreciate its ongoing narrative.
In sum, the enduring allure of this Pomerol masterpiece from such a commanding vintage makes the 2000 L'Evangile an essential cornerstone for any serious collection. Its graceful ageing profile couples with investment allure to position this resplendent wine as a paragon of fine Bordeaux viticulture for years to come.

This is an absolutely spectacular L’Evangile. It remains to be seen whether 2009 will eclipse this great effort. Largely a Merlot-dominated blend with some Cabernet Franc in it, the greatness of this terroir is exhibited in the complexity of the nose, which offers up hints of subtle chocolate, blueberry, blackberry, truffle, barbecue smoke, and graphite. Dense, rich, and full-bodied, with an opulence and succulence that are prodigious, the tannins are present but extremely sweet, and the wine multi-dimensional and just emerging as a compellingly complex, head-turning beauty. Drink it now and over the next 20-25 years. Kudos to L’Evangile.

Massive grip, very long, a top 2000. I wrote en primeur. Again in September 2003 at Farr's 2000 horizontal: A very similar nose to L'Eglise-Clinet, more backward with a little liquorice. Maybe the nose doesn't quite have the depth of the above. The palate is huge, tannic, and backward with a dense core of spicy blackcurrants at the centre. This will be a long-lived wine. Stunning. Finally in September 2005. A deeper colour than the 1998. A dense, concentrated cedary nose that unfurls with hints of liquorice and pure blackberry, cassis fruit. The palate is strong and burly with a dense, spicy core and high extraction. Very good acidity, firm, with a metallic note on the finish and a pain grille aftertaste. Outstanding wine.
