2005 Trotanoy from Chateau Trotanoy, Pomerol, Bordeaux
In the pantheon of exquisite Bordeaux, the name that reverberates with a hushed awe is none other than the 2005 Trotanoy from Chateau Trotanoy. Its vintage was serenaded with climatic idyll; a summer kissed by Helios himself gave way to an Indian summer—a vigneron’s dream—that bestowed the noble berries with impeccable ripeness.
Vintage Virtuosity Finding Its Muse in Terroir
Crystallizing what was a golden year for Bordeaux, the 2005 vintage of this indomitable Pomerol radiates a complexity and structural magnificence unparalleled by its antecedents. There's an inherent aristocracy in every sip—the patrician fruit, the opulence of texture—that speaks of its superb terroir and enlightened winemaking.
A Chronicle of Elegance Refined by Time
Upon decanting, one is greeted with an orchestration of black truffles and dark cherries intertwined with aged leather and cigar box notes; a symphonious interplay seemingly choreographed by the wine gods. The palate—flush with an aristocratic tapestry of dark plum and blackberry—is firm yet supple, commanding attention with every measured sip. This 2005 Trotanoy ebbs with sufficient tannins that have softened into a silken glove over years, holding promise for continued evolution within one's cellar.
The Astute Investor's Reward
For connoisseurs and investors alike, this tour de force remains one of the most coveted acquisitions. Its potent reputation for aging with an almost mythical grace makes it a paragon among liquid assets. The climax of any vertical tasting or curated portfolio is irrefutably marked by this very Pomerol; such is its reputation for delivering both hedonistic pleasure and remarkable investment potential.
Entrusting this 2005 Trotanoy from Chateau Trotanoy to one's collection is not merely an investiture into fine wine but a homage to an extraordinary year when nature and human mastery met in rhapsodic unison. This vintage stands as an immutable witness to Pomerol’s perennial promise—a triumphant je ne sais quoi encased within each bottle that beckons fervent admiration.

This has a captivating nose of blueberries, spices, and fresh lilacs. On the palate this offers a full body, serious intensity, and great acidity and richness. This is a wonderful wine that shows great contrast and wildness.

Tasted at the Trotanoy vertical in Hong Kong, the 2005 Trotanoy has been an awesome Pomerol since birth. Now at 12 years old, the "giant" is beginning to flex its muscles. It has more red than black fruit, more floral than the likes of the 2000 or 2001, beautifully defined with raspberry coulis, wild strawberry, clove and bay leaf, iris and violet unfurling with continued aeration. The palate has a pleasurable grainy texture and fine salinity. The acidity is extremely well judged, and there is the structure and backbone, perhaps even the stubbornness that defines this great vineyard. There is enormous potential here. Tasted November 2016.

Tasted single blind at Southwold. A fabulous Trotanoy that harks back to the glory days. It has a smoky earthy, sous-bois nose with touches of damp moss and liquorices. Good definition and complexity. The palate is very ripe with good weight, fine acidity, mulberry and liquorices towards the finish with an earthy quality just waiting side of stage. Nice harmony and length. Well crafted and full of character. Drink 2015-2030+ Tasted January 2009.

Complex aromas of sweet black cherries, loamy soil, roasted herbs, coffee, chocolate, and oak dominate the backward, muscular, virile 2005 Trotanoy. Deep ruby/purple to the rim, this broodingly backward, deep Pomerol exhibits admirable intensity, impressive purity, and a long, concentrated finish. Its character is similar to that of the 1998, but with more structure and tannin. I suspect my score will prove to be conservative after a decade of bottle age. Along with Petrus and Lafleur, Trotanoy is the most backward of all the Pomerols. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2035.
