1996 Angelus
By Chateau Angelus
1996 Angelus from Chateau Angelus, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux
When we speak of quintessential Bordeaux vintages, the 1996 season frequently earns its mention. Within this context, the 1996 Angelus from Chateau Angelus manifests as a particularly cerebral vintage, emblematic of Saint-Emilion's profound ability to translate terroir and climatic nuance into vinous sophistication.
The Herald of Merlot and Cabernet Franc
The usual interplay between Merlot and Cabernet Franc is given a riveting twist in this vintage. An unseasonably dry and sunny September allowed a longer hang-time for the grapes, which contributed to producing layers of complexity and an exquisite tannic frame. This particular year saw Merlot take precedence in terms of volume but not overshadow the profound influence of Cabernet Franc’s bright minerality and aromatic precision.
An Investment Worthy Vintage
For fine wine investors seeking wines with superb aging potential and exceptional character, the 1996 Angelus presents such an opportunity. The investment merit of this vintage stems from its distinct composition: a mélange of rich blackberry and plum nuances supported by a thrilling vein of acidity that ensures longevity. This wine's profound structure is supported by a deft touch of oak that has integrated seamlessly over the years.
Decanting reveals an evolving bouquet, reminiscent of truffles and cigar box, indicative of its pedigree and careful maturation. A refined palate portrays Saint-Emilion's classic elegance; a symphony of dark fruit harmonizes with subtle herbaceous notes.
The 1996 vintage's grace on the secondary market is a testament to its status among connoisseurs and collectors alike; it drinks magnificently now yet promises additional complexity with further cellaring.
In summation, the savoury qualities found in this particular offering affirm the 1996 Angelus as a wine that embodies both the essence of its storied vintage and the renowned craftsmanship of Chateau Angelus. It is an illustrative chapter in Bordeaux's rich anthology – one that continues to fascinate the palates of discerning oenophiles and investors with a sense for transcendent wines.

A massive, powerful Angelus, this wine exhibits a saturated black/ruby/purple color as well as an impressively-endowed nose of dried herbs, roasted meats, new saddle leather, plum liqueur, and cassis. In the mouth, olive notes make an impression. This sweet, full-bodied, exceptionally concentrated wine is atypically backward and ferociously tannic. It was revealing more sweetness and forwardness immediately prior to bottling, but I would now recommend 7-8 years of cellaring. Anticipated Maturity: 2007-2025.

Tasted at Farr Vintners' vertical from ex-chateau magnum. Noticeably deep in colour, the 1996 has quite a generous, slightly muffled bouquet when compared to say, the 1998. Macerated red cherries, raspberry, cedar and a touch of cough mixture. The palate is medium-bodied, building nicely in the mouth with the Cabernet Franc defining the finish. Quite masculine, perhaps reserved to what I was expecting, but nicely composed. It still lacks something in the middle and I find the 1995 far better. Tasted October 2011.
