By Chateau Cheval Blanc
2013 Le Petit Cheval from Château Cheval Blanc, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux
In the ballet of Bordeaux vintages, the 2013 performance witnessed a season of challenges; a true test of terroir and the winemaker's art. It is within this complex backdrop that the 2013 Le Petit Cheval from Château Cheval Blanc pirouettes with an unexpected grace. This vintage stands as testament to the tenacity and skill inherent at Château Cheval Blanc, delivering a wine worthy of investor consideration amidst the rigors imposed by Mother Nature that year.
A Vintage Unveiling Elegance Under Duress
The 2013 vintage was fraught with trials from a damp spring to a cool summer, leading to a harvest that demanded precision and foresight. Yet, the team at Château Cheval Blanc transcended these adversities, crafting a Le Petit Cheval blend that reveals both vibrancy and structure - an illuminating second wine from an otherwise dim vintage narrative.
On the palate, this vintage of 2013 Le Petit Cheval quietly defies expectations set by the year's climatic rollercoaster. Accents of red fruits, delicately intertwined with earthy undertones and a whisper of spice, speak to an underestimated potency and longevity. Its fine tannins embroider a tapestry of balance that hints at both the resilience of Saint-Émilion's terroir and the adroit hand involved in its making.
Savvy Investment in a Sleeper Vintage
For the astute wine investor, 2013 Le Petit Cheval presents an intriguing proposition. While not basking in the same limelight as its more celebrated siblings, it undoubtedly offers a thoughtful diversification for investment portfolios. Moreover, its subtleties and complexities can offer pleasurable drinking now or be cellared for those seeking to allow its narrative to develop further over time.
The dance of 2013 Le Petit Cheval may have commenced on precarious footing, but as the curtain falls, it emerges with the quiet confidence that only true character under duress can exhibit. A reflection not only of its storied home but also an emblematic reminder that beauty often thrives in adversity—that is the silent song sang by this worthy investment candidate.

The 2013 Le Petit Cheval is composed of 79% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc. This light-bodied, elegant second wine is okay, but not exciting. It should drink well for 7-8 years.
Cheval Blanc began their harvest on September 26 and, because of the tropical humidity and disease pressure, finished quickly.

The 2013 Le Petit Cheval, actually a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc (yes I know, different to the primeur blends quoted!), has a light red berry, strawberry and briary-scented bouquet that is brisk and fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, light but balanced with a chalky finish. Drink now and over the next 4-5 years. Just 16,000 bottles were produced.
