In the grand tapestry of Bordeaux vintages, the 2011 Chateau Faugeres emerges as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of Saint-Émilion's terroir. The year was a challenging one; growers in Bordeaux faced a fitful start to the season and an unpredictable summer. Nevertheless, amidst these trials, the skilled vignerons at Chateau Peby Faugeres have sculpted a vintage with remarkable poise and finesse.

Investment-worthy Craftsmanship

The 2011 vintage from Saint-Émilion does not bask in the limelight like its immediate predecessor, yet it holds a distinguished position among collectors and investors for its immediate pleasure and medium-term cellaring potential. It is a testament to the dedication at Chateau Peby Faugeres that this year's expression remains faithful to the estate’s style: structured, robust and replete with depth.

Character Shaped by Clime and Time

From the outset, the 2011 Chateau Faugeres shows a lively ruby hue, proposing a youthful vitality that belies its years. The nose offers an intriguing melange of dark fruits, where blackcurrant and plum intertwine with subtler hints of cedar and tobacco – a clear signature from this corner of Bordeaux.

On the palate, one is greeted with an elegant tannic structure that has mellowed gracefully, supporting layers of complexity brought forth by attentive ageing. This is where the wine truly converses with the senses. It asserts ripe fruit flavours tempered by earthy undercurrents and a mellow spiciness that resonates through to a satisfyingly long finish.

The 2011 Chateau Faugeres from Chateau Peby Faugeres exhibits an impressive balance that can only be fashioned from less-than-ideal conditions through masterful winemaking. It is both approachable now yet promises further unfolding for those with patience – a duality which speaks to its investment allure.

Reflections on Investment Appeal

In summing up the appeal of the 2011 Chateau Faugeres for fine wine investors, it suffices to say that what it may ostensibly lack in reputation when stood beside more heralded years, it compensates for with its charm and poise. This bottling embodies finely-tuned craftsmanship navigating turbulent climatic narratives to deliver a wine that is delightfully expressive now, yet also presents potential for exploration as it progresses into the heartier chapters of its evolution.

One of the super classics of the vintage, the 2011 Peby Faugeres (100% Merlot) exhibits a dense blue/purple color as well as gorgeous aromas of acacia flowers, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. This full-bodied, concentrated wine has more in common with a 2009 or 2010 than most 2011s. The extravagant fruit character nearly conceals some sweet tannin in this masterpiece. Drink it over the next two decades or more.
