1997 Calon-Segur from Chateau Calon-Segur, St-Estephe, Bordeaux
In the elegant realm of Bordeaux, the 1997 vintage at Chateau Calon-Segur often plays a melodious tune that belies the challenges of the year. Known less for the storied heat of '95 or the excess rain in '96, the '97 vintage stands as an exemplar of the producer's ingenuity – coaxing grace from capricious weather patterns with prudent winemaking savoir-faire.
A Tale of Terroir and Talent
With an empathetic understanding of St-Estephe’s unique terroir and microclimate, Chateau Calon-Segur harvested a wine that balances ripe fruit with mature tannins in an act of exquisite equilibrium. As a result, our 1997 Calon-Segur bears the hallmarks of thoughtful vinification, presenting investors with a choicely aged proposition.
Provenance and Patience: Keys to a Fine Vintage
Venerable vintages are not solely the offspring of favourable weather but are also cultivated through meticulous vineyard management and cellar maturation. In this respect, 1997 afforded Chateau Calon-Segur an opportunity to illustrate its finesse. The blend, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Petit Verdot whispers, offers a bouquet interlacing dried cherry and tobacco leaf with secondary earthy undertones and a wisp of cedar spice – reminiscent of an autumnal jaunt through the Médoc.
The palate remains vibrant with cassis and aged leather, showcasing a suave integration over time. While not as robust as some titans from sunnier vintages, its elegance is befitting of a wine investment seeking refinement over bravado. Considering its age, the 1997 Calon-Segur maintains a commendable structure and length, poised with enough vitality to suggest additional years in a well-curated cellar will sustain its pedigree.
In totality, the 1997 Calon-Segur from Chateau Calon-Segur is one of those unassuming treasures – serenading quietly amidst bolder vintages. It emerges as a compelling choice for investors drawn to wines that champion nuance and poise over ostentation. A prise de position now could yield dividends as this sleeper captures the hearts and palates of connoisseurs who appreciate Bordeaux’s subtle symphonies.

Scores and tasting notes
A soft, weedy Calon-Segur, with a washed-out ruby color, herb, pepper, and earthy aromas, light to medium body, and low tannin, this 1997 should be consumed over the next 3-4 years.
Robert Parker Jr - The Wine Advocate, 20 April 2000
Tasted in 1999 there nose was full of blackcurrant and minerals on the intense nose. Firm tannins with integrated dark fruits. Good length. Very good. Tasted again in December 2001: this seems to have become very thin and astringent. A real vegetal streak in this wine. Falling apart sooner than expected.
