2011 Beychevelle
By Chateau Beychevelle
2011 Beychevelle from Chateau Beychevelle, St-Julien, Bordeaux
Embarking on a thorough examination of the 2011 Beychevelle from Chateau Beychevelle, one discerns a vintage that dances delicately on the tightrope of Bordeaux’s unpredictable climatic patterns. This particular year, while challenging for many producers, has unveiled pockets of finesse and strength that are articulated with deftness in this St-Julien standout.
Persistence and Poise: A Vintage Speaks
The 2011 vintage, arriving on the heels of the magnificent 2009 and 2010 vintages, could easily have been overshadowed. Instead, it carves out its own identity with an intriguing combination of ripe fruit and structural integrity that are the hallmarks of St-Julien terroir. The harbingers of spring in 2011 bore promise but were quickly followed by a less than ideal growing season. However, thanks to meticulous vineyard management and the reflective savoir-faire of Chateau Beychevelle’s winemaking team, the resulting wine is laden with notes of blackcurrant, cedar and a whisper of spice gained from judicious oak aging – embodying both resilience and grace.
An Investment Worth Savoring
For the fine wine investor attuned to opportunities tinged with distinction, the 2011 Beychevelle presents an appealing proposition. This is a vintage that reveals its virtues not through bombast but through balance and an almost savant ability to draw profundity from adversity. Its tannins, while firm, are rounding commendably with bottle age, and for those who prefer their claret without the quotient of decades-long waiting, this vintage offers a comparatively early window into the elegance characteristic of Chateau Beychevelle.
In closing, the 2011 Beychevelle encapsulates the virtues that make for a prudent addition to any diversified wine investment portfolio. It navigates its climatic hurdles with poise; presenting a vintage both firmly rooted in St-Julien’s prestigious lineage, whilst conversing fluently in its own distinctive dialect of excellence.

An attractive 2011 with lots of blackberry, hazelnut and walnut character. Medium to full body with chewy tannins and a fresh finish. Better in 2017.
James Suckling - jamessuckling.com, February 19th, 2014
The Beychevelle 2011 is a blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot that was picked between 14th and 29th September, with twelve days of picking between those dates. The yield is one of Beychevelle's lowest at 39.5hl/ha with 13.2% alcohol and an IPT of 78. It has decent concentration on the nose, red rather than black fruit: raspberry, cranberry and a touch of pomegranate struck through with graphite and tobacco. It is medium-bodied with chalky tannins on the entry that is showing a little grittiness and chalkiness to its texture. It has crisp acidity and firm backbone with a grainy, masculine, tobacco tinged, tapered finish that is a little raw at present. Tasted April 2012.
Neal Martin - Wine Journal May 2012
A medium-bodied, pleasant, lighter style of St.-Julien, the 2011 Beychevelle reveals a dark plum/ruby color in addition to notes of strawberries, black cherries, new saddle leather and hints of herbs and earth. Refreshing and delicate, it should drink well for 10-15 years.
Robert Parker Jr - Wine Advocate #200 April 2012
Beychevelle appears to have handled the 2011 vintage in an intelligent manner, producing a soft, round, attractive, medium-bodied wine that, while not terribly deep or powerful, is well-balanced with excellent equilibrium and lots of dusty, loamy soil notes interwoven with black cherry and plummy fruit. This pretty St.-Julien can be drunk over the next decade.
