2017 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes from Domaine des Comtes Lafon, Burgundy, France
The majestic terroirs of Burgundy offer an exquisite canvas for vintners, and few articulate the nuance of their landscapes as eloquently as Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Exemplifying this is the 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes from Domaine des Comtes Lafon, a creation that conveys the character of its vintage with precision and finesse.
Refinement and Complexity: A Connoisseur's Delight
In examining the 2017 vintage in Burgundy, one remarks on the oscillation between frost-tinged beginnings and a ripening season blessed with ample sunshine. This pendulum of climatic conditions has bestowed the 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes with a vibrant acidity and tension that zealously frames its rich, nutty depths and citrus blossom aromatics.
The wine's palate exudes creamy undertones, testament to the adept application of oak that Domaine des Comtes Lafon is renowned for. Yet there lies a restraint — an adherence to the equilibrium that is ever-present due to the vineyard's limestone soils and the season’s moderate warmth culminating in grapes of exemplary maturity.
Informed Investment: Bottle Poise and Market Grace
For enthusiasts looking to diversify their portfolio, the investment appeal of this splendid 2017 vintage should not be understated. The Meursault 1er Cru Charmes from Domaine des Comtes Lafon presents a formidably structured addition that promises evolution with graceful bottle age yet captivates even now with its immediate charm.
Aligning with optimal ageing potential, this 2017 rendition reflects a vintage-specific terroir expression that remains an enticing prospect for collectors. The uniqueness of this particular year imbues it with scarcity — an attribute indelibly appreciated in markets where provenance and singularity are handsomely rewarded.
Summarily, the 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes encapsulates a symphony of minerality and textured opulence. It articulates the tale of its origin through varied registers - a reflection of a year where Burgundian winemakers navigated nature's complexities with deft artistry. It stands as an enduring narrative bottling - one whose storied pages will turn increasingly captivating in the cellar’s dim light.

The 2017 Meursault Les Rougeots is as usual more muscular and textural than the Chevalières. Exhibiting scents of pear, crisp white peach, hazelnuts and flowers, framed by a delicate touch of oak vanillin, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a deep and multidimensional core, excellent concentration and a bright spine of acidity. This is always a very age-worthy cuvée, and the 2017 will merit at least a decade to unwind in the cellar—even if it's deceptively approachable out of the gates.
