By Domaine Georges Roumier

2014 Ruchottes Chambertin from Domaine Georges Roumier, Burgundy, France

The 2014 vintage in Burgundy was one that demanded the utmost finesse from its vintners, a year where only the most deft hands could craft a wine of remarkable distinction. Such skill is evident in the wines from Domaine Georges Roumier, particularly so in their Ruchottes Chambertin. With over four decades spent meticulously chronicling the subtleties of Burgundy's terroirs, the 2014 from this revered estate provides an exemplar narrative of resilience married to elegance.

A Testament to Mastery and Climate

The dance of climatic challenges in 2014, from cool spells to hailstorms, could have spelled adversity for many. Yet for Domaine Georges Roumier, it acted as a canvas on which to paint one of the more singular expressions of their Ruchottes Chambertin. This nuanced vintage reveals a less hedonistic character than its forebears, prioritising a bewitching complexity over sheer power.

Upon decanting, one finds a juxtaposition between vibrant, almost buoyant red fruit profiles and the deeper, brooding earthy notes that are cherished in Burgundian Pinot Noir. This wine weaves a crimson tapestry enriched with layers of raspberry, cherry pit, and an inflection of clove. Accompanying this is a minerality that whispers of the Ruchottes' stone-laden soils – compelling evidence of this plot's celebrated geology speaking through its vintage progeny.

Investment Merits and Maturation Potential

In the sphere of fine wine investment, maturation potential is a crucial factor. The 2014 Ruchottes Chambertin from Domaine Georges Roumier displays the hallmarks of a wine that will unfurl gracefully over time. The tannic structure is assertively woven yet polished – a disposition promising substantial development for those who exercise patience.

To conclude, the 2014 Ruchottes Chambertin from Domaine Georges Roumier emerges not merely as an impressive testament to the winemaker's art in a challenging year but also as an enticing proposition for collectors and investors alike. It encapsulates the essence of the vintage, offering an elegant evolution ahead for those disposed to laying down bottles within their cellars.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting, Christophe Roumier's 2014 Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru had a touch of volatile acidity on the nose, more feisty and fruit-driven than its peers, the barrel more pronounced and clearly requiring more time to be fully assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, more austere in style but nicely proportioned. There is impressive tension and salinity toward the marine-influenced finish and it feels very persistent. Give it 3 or 4 years in bottle. Tasted September 2017.
