2005 Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Leroy, Burgundy, France

Within the hallowed terroir of Burgundy, few names resonate with the timbre and prestige as that of Domaine Leroy. The legendary Lalou Bize-Leroy perseveres in her meticulous craftsmanship, immortalising her commitment to biodynamic viticulture with each vintage released. Indeed, the 2005 vintage holds an enviable position, lauded for its exacting balance and longevity not commonly seen in lesser years.

Exceptional Terroir Meets Unparalleled Craft

With a particularly warm summer followed by an impeccable September in 2005, the harvest was nothing short of a vigneron's idyll. The 2005 Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Leroy presents a kaleidoscope to the senses; it unearths sumptuous layers of complexity, inviting investiture in both organoleptic pleasure and pecuniary sagacity.

A Vintage Defined by Elegance and Power

The wine's aromatic profile is a rich tapestry woven from dark ripe cherries and blackcurrant, entwined with an undercurrent of earthy minerality typical of its esteemed geographical indication. Upon indulgence, what unfolds is a symphony composed of lush fruit juxtaposed against an elegant structure of refined tannins, ascending to an astonishingly long finish that reverberates with notes of spice and truffle.

A paramount expression of both the varietal and its vintage, this exquisite 2005 Grand Cru speaks volumes to the climatic felicity during its appellation – a year that delivered wines marked as much by their intensity as by their precision of flavour.

To the wise investor or collector seeking to enrich their portfolio with a wine that encapsulates exceptional provenance and rarity, the 2005 Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Leroy presents itself as an emblematic choice. As this splendid Burgundian year steadily ascends into its optimal window of degustation, it promises not just a multiplicity of sensory delights but a bolstering of value over time.

Allow yourself to be astounded by the mastery encapsulated within this bottle – for herein lies not only a storied past but indeed, a glorious future.

Leroy’s 2005 Chambertin (like her Musigny and Clos Vougeot, from three parcels) leads with a knockout punch of super-concentrated, liqueur-like black raspberry, cassis, and licorce, rose petal (no, make that the whole rose garden!), and deep, roasted meatiness. Monumentally dense, yet vibrant and energetic, this builds momentum on the palate as it adds black pepper, tactile cinnamon spice, and distilled fruit and herb concentration. I have seldom experienced such a literal (not to mention phenomenally long) finish: it simply wiped the floor with your humble critic. If I were ever to encounter this wine in the ring again, I pray that it won’t be for at least a decade (and that it spots me 98 points). Importer: Martine’s Wines. Novato, CA; tel. (415) 883-0400
