By Gaja
2001 Sorì Tildìn from Gaja, Barbaresco, Italy
The 2001 Sorì Tildìn from Gaja represents a singular high-point in the esteemed record of fine wines from Italy. Half a century of practice, patience, and perseverance by Angelo Gaja himself has led to this revered bottle hailing from the compact yet diverse wine region of Barbaresco.
A concert of climatic extremities
The 2001 growing season in Piedmont was one that bore witness to a most endearing climate for nebbiolo vines. As nature reacted to the unusual weather patterns of the region, it allowed for the interpretive interplay between terroir and grape variety to take centre stage. It was this exact symphony of climatic extremities which resulted in optimal phenolic maturity - a factor that is keenly expressed in every daring sip.
Taste: A Chorus of Complexity
In a glass pour of 2001 Sorì Tildìn, an admirer is met with a powerful yet harmonious explosion of flavour. The crimson-tinged ambrosia embodies nuanced intricacies; it ebbs and flows with deep floral nuances complemented eloquently by dark fruit expressions. Notes of decadent black cherry and violets mesh harmoniously with echoes of earthy truffles and exotic spices, forging a labyrinthine taste profile quite unparalleled.
Terroir: Transcending the Earthly Realm
The distinguished vineyard Sorì Tildìn possesses rocky limestone soils enriched with veins of clay that together afford the vines an enriched palette. These unique conditions bespeak themselves boldly through this vintage’s structured tannins and those lingering mineral-laden strokes that set Gaja's Sorì Tildìn 2001 apart.
A Fusion of Finesse and Power
This vintage, esteemed as a wine investor’s delight, offers a nuanced demonstration of how fine wines can balance power, complexity, and elegance. Its capacity to continue evolving over the years perpetuates anticipation among connoisseurs and collectors alike, underscoring its tangible investment potential.
Indeed, the 2001 Sorì Tildìn from Gaja exemplifies the unmatched calibre of Italian Barbaresco wine in every aspect; it performs an opulent dance between that extraordinary 2001 climatic response, combined with Gaja's relentless dedication to winemaking transformation, making it one of the finest fine wines for investment from the region.

Scores and tasting notes
The 2001 Sori Tildin is stellar. It shows the typical Tildin pointedness, with gorgeous delineation throughout. The fruit remains fabulously rich and vibrant from start to finish. This is a very refined showing from Angelo Gaja. The 2001 is still quite young and appears to have a bright future. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2026. Angelo Gaja isn’t the talkative type too often these days. Most of the time I am greeted, left alone in a room to taste, and then greeted again before I leave. On this day, though, Gaja started talking about vintages, and in particular the misconception that wines from hot years don’t age. Gaja cited 1961, a warm year in Piedmont, and one of the most legendary at the time. The wines aged just fine, added Gaja. What struck me most, though, was how clear Gaja’s recollection was of events that transpired fifty years ago. I know only one other person in Piedmont who has a similarly sharp memory that goes that far back. What does that have to do with these 2001s? Not much, except that it seemed like an interesting anecdote to share. Importer: Terlato Wines International, Lake Bluff, IL; tel. (847) 604 8900
