2011 Cote Rotie la Landonne from Delas Freres, Rhone

In the chronicles of distinguished viticulture, the 2011 Cote Rotie la Landonne from Delas Freres has certainly carved its niche. This vintage pulsates with the charm of an extraordinary setting and year, harnessing the idiosyncratic nuances that 2011 gifted the Rhone region.

Vibrancy from a challenging vintage

In climatic terms, 2011 posed unprecedented trials for Rhone. But where some saw adversity, Delas Freres skilfully manoeuvred these trials to extract the unrivalled character in their fermented brew. Their deft navigation of this vineyard rollercoaster is expressed eloquently in this vintage.

Crafted predominantly from Syrah grapes matured on the iron-rich soils of Cote Rotie, this Côtes du Rhône wine transcends familiar boundaries of depth and layers — a tribute to skilful vinification in response to a difficult season.

Investing in a taste of terroir

Upon uncorking, the 2011 Cote Rotie la Landonne unravels an enthralling nose intertwining notes of blackberry and spiced plum with delicate undertones of smoked meat and exotic spices. The palate, on the other hand, boasts an extravagant scale of depth and balance. It translates into ripe black fruit characters seamlessly draped over a robust tannic structure while hints of mineral-driven earthiness encircle it all, signifying firm soil connection.

Although ready for immediate enjoyment, prospective investors might find further gratification in cellaring this vintage for years to come. Its inherent complexity and carefully balanced intensity indicate promising ageing potential.

Delas Freres' sublime interpretation of Rhone

For an investor focused on selectivity, the 2011 Cote Rotie la Landonne from Delas Freres furnishes undeniable allure. Its standout vintage character, coupled with a timeless expression of Rhone viticulture, introduces an inimitable edge to a wine portfolio bound by discerning tastes.

In every swirl, sip and savour, this exalted Syrah speaks volumes for the unequaled resilience of its makers whilst painting an intoxicating portrait of a time and place. A testament to exceptional vineyard stewardship, a vintage that, like the immortal lines of an epicurean ballad, will resonate throughout the casks of time.

The 2011 Cote Rotie La Landonne (500 cases produced) is a rich, full-bodied, muscular effort displaying notes of tar, barbecue smoke, roasted meats, game and lots of black currant and blackberry fruit. Some incense, espresso roast and chocolaty notes are also present in this complex, surprisingly evolved and elegant, young Cote Rotie La Landonne. It should drink well for 10-15 years. (Not yet released) Over the last 10-15 years, Delas Freres, which had muddled along with no great distinction for many years, has hit full stride under the ownership of the Louis Roederer-Deutz Champagne firm and the management of Jacques Grange, who continues to push the envelope of quality for both the Northern and Southern Rhone selections. The top single vineyard wines are world class in every sense, often flirting with perfection. Moreover, readers should realize this is also an impressive source for value. Delas’s top St.-Joseph cuvee comes from the hillside vineyards overlooking the small commune of St.-Jean de Muzols. The Delas firm owns 25 acres in Hermitage from which they make a basic cuvee, called Domaine des Tourettes, and, in the greatest vintages, a luxury cuvee, Les Bessards, which comes entirely from the great lieu-dit of the same name. Delas has long had a reputation for making outstanding Condrieu, of which he makes two cuvees. Importer: Maison Marques et Domaines, Oakland, CA; tel. (510) 587-2000
