Californian wineries largely unaffected by record wildfire

By

California’s recent wildfire  the largest on record  burned through more than 300,000 acres and destroyed over 100 homes, but wineries in the region appear to have been spared.

Some wineries in Mendocino County were issued evacuation orders, with vineyards in Lake County bearing the brunt of the smoke. However, grower Andy Beckstoffer told Decanter that he thinks the “probability of smoke damage is very slight”, but tests are being carried out nonetheless.

It’s believed that the closer the fruit is to ripening, the greater the effects of smoke. Fortunately, most grapes in the area are still in their very early stages of growth.
