Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill 2008 has been released in the UK at £1,400 per case of 12. Paul Graham, director of business development at Pol Roger, says the 2008 vintage is the “best vintage since 1988 and the most investible Churchill we’ve ever made.”
Indeed, Liv-ex notes that the release may represent “an exciting opportunity”, as prices are not closely correlated to critic scores, and instead appreciate in price with the passage of time. The wine has already traded on Liv-ex for £1,800 per case of 12, marking a 28.5% increase on the initial release price.
Stephan Reinhardt is the only major critic to have scored the 2008 vintage so far. He awarded the wine 96 points and described it as “most likely one of the finest of this century and one of the greatest Churchills of modern times”.
However, Liv-ex reports that the volume of stock coming to market is extremely limited, with allocations only being given to those that purchased the 2006 vintage.
