Masters of the Vine: Dönnhoff and the Nahe Legacy
In the heart of Germany’s Nahe region lies a family estate whose name is synonymous with perfection in winemaking. Dönnhoff is a producer who has, over generations, transformed the rolling hills of the Nahe into a canvas for some of the world’s most compelling dry Rieslings. Their precise, elegant, and profoundly expressive wines have earned a cult following among collectors and enthusiasts, with their Grosses Gewächs (GG) offerings standing as benchmarks of quality.
The Nahe is one of Germany’s most distinctive wine regions, and Dönnhoff is its undisputed star. Helmut Dönnhoff, the estate’s visionary winemaker for over four decades, elevated the winery to international prominence, and his son, Cornelius, now carries that legacy forward with equal passion and precision. Together, they have made Dönnhoff a name that is whispered with reverence in the world of fine wine.

The Nahe: A Region of Balance and Beauty
Tucked between the more famous Mosel and Rheinhessen regions, the Nahe is a treasure trove of diversity. Its soils range from volcanic rock to slate to loess, creating a patchwork of terroirs that yield Rieslings of remarkable complexity and individuality. The Dönnhoff family has cultivated these soils for over 250 years, crafting wines that capture the essence of this singular landscape. What sets the Nahe apart is its ability to produce wines of balance—combining the mineral tension of the Mosel with the richness of the Rheingau.
It’s a region that rewards careful attention to detail, and few have mastered its nuances like the Dönnhoff family. Their wines are often described as having a sense of “effortless perfection,” a testament to their deep understanding of the land.
The Pinnacle of Terroir: Dönnhoff’s Grand Cru Vineyards
At the heart of Dönnhoff’s success are their Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) vineyards, which are the foundation for their stunning Grosses Gewächs wines. Each vineyard is a unique expression of its terroir, and the wines crafted from these sites are among the finest dry Rieslings in the world.
Hermannshöhle: The Crown Jewel
The Hermannshöhle vineyard is the Nahe’s most celebrated site, and its name is synonymous with greatness. With its combination of slate and volcanic soils, Hermannshöhle produces wines of extraordinary depth, minerality, and elegance. The 2023 Dönnhoff Hermannshöhle Riesling Dry Grosses Gewächs is a prime example, earning a stellar 96+ points. It is a wine of balance and precision, where vibrant citrus, white peach, and smoky minerality converge into a seamless expression of the vineyard’s potential.
For collectors, Hermannshöhle is the ultimate statement of terroir. These wines are built to age gracefully for decades, evolving from their youthful vibrancy into a symphony of complexity.
Dellchen: Power and Precision
While Hermannshöhle may be the flagship, the Dellchen vineyard offers a different, equally compelling perspective. Nestled on steep, terraced slopes, Dellchen’s soils are a mix of volcanic stone and clay, yielding Rieslings of structure and intensity. The 2023 Dönnhoff Dellchen Riesling Dry Grosses Gewächs showcases this vineyard’s signature power, earning 96 points for its layered aromatics of ripe pear, lime zest, and floral notes, underscored by a taut mineral backbone.
Dellchen represents the muscular side of Dönnhoff’s portfolio, delivering wines that captivate with their concentration and length. For collectors, it’s a vineyard that adds depth and variety to any fine Riesling collection.
Crafting Collectible Rieslings
Dönnhoff’s approach to winemaking is one of minimal intervention, allowing the vineyards to speak through the wines. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, and fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts. Ageing typically takes place in neutral oak or stainless steel, preserving the purity and precision that define their style.
The results are wines that are both approachable in their youth and capable of ageing for decades. Critics have long celebrated Dönnhoff’s wines for their consistency and elegance, with the Grosses Gewächs offerings regularly achieving scores that place them among the world’s finest white wines.
Exploring Dönnhoff: Iconic Wines, Vintage Insights, and Market Trends
Visiting the Nahe region is quite something. Extremely picturesque steep hill-sided vineyards, with a beautiful river and idyllic countryside village, home to the best wineries, including Dönnhoff.
Given the prestige, critical acclaim and high scores achieved by this estate, you are struck by the humility and graciousness of the vignerons here. In contrast to the Molitor tasting, the dry Riesling’s on show at Dönnhoff felt extremely precise, with bracing acidity, stunning depth, power and persistence.
Every bottling we tried, from the entry-level up to the Monopole’s and Gross Lage GGs, such as Dellchen, Felsenberg and Hermannshohle, demonstrated a clear style and embodied the philosophy that they embrace. Maybe due to the Nahe region’s lesser reputation in comparison to the Mosel and Rheinhessen, these majestic wines are still so well priced.
Dönnhoff Dellchen GG
As the table and the graph show, demand and pricing have been growing consistently over the past 8 years, but despite the increased demand and high scores being achieved, including 100 points for the 2021 Dellchen, for the most part, prices are around £50-60 per bottle depending on the vintage. And if you can access ex-cellar on the initial release price, you will gain a sizable discount on the secondary market levels.
Volumes and availability on the market for these top GGs certainly dry up when you look at back vintages, as both domestic and international buyers snap up the newest vintage. But it feels like patience will reward both drinkers and collectors, as these beauties will age effortlessly for the next 20-30 years.
We were fortunate to taste some older library stock from the cellar, and seeing first-hand how these wines evolve was equally impressive. The most exciting thing about getting behind a brand and a producer such as Dönnhoff at this point in the journey is they are already a well-established global name.
Dry Riesling continues to grow and increase in popularity globally, achieving some of the highest critic scores year after year, even with production being small and limited to Grand Cru plots such as Dellchen, Felsenberg and Hermanscholle.
Each year, the new releases from the winery are priced fairly, often cheaper than any other vintage. The availability of back vintages on the market is small and hard to find, with many trading at big premiums to the newest release. As a result, you are often buying the newest, cheapest, best-scored vintage with a clear and demonstrable track record of price evolution, whilst the wider macro trend for the category (German Riesling) is favourable.
The graph below shows the price evolution of the Hermannschohle GG.
Considered the crown jewel in the portfolio, the Hermannschohle GG has performed equally as well as Dellchen over the past few years. Always reasonably well priced on release with high scores to match (increasingly so in recent years), this provides collectors with incredible value.
