In the pantheon of fine Bordeaux reds, the 1999 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux from Chateau Margaux emerges as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of this revered estate. An Ode to Patience and Precision

The 1999 vintage in Margaux was not without its trials; a wet spring proceeded to a hot summer, followed by September rains just prior to harvest. The resulting wine is a triumph of careful selection and astute craftsmanship.

Deciphering the 1999 Vintage

Tasting the 1999 Pavillon Rouge today reveals a bouquet that has evolved gracefully, where primary notes of macerated cherry and blackcurrant have married with earthy undertones of forest floor and sweet tobacco. On the palate, there's an elegance that few can parallel; silky tannins support a well-structured body that encapsulates quintessential Margaux finesse.

With over two decades of repose, this vintage remarkably retains a lively acidity that imparts freshness amidst its more mature characters—clearly articulating why fine wine investors cherish holdings of such storied wines. The 1999 vintage conveys not just the soul of Margaux but also sings praises to an exemplary year that demanded exceptional viticultural fortitude.

For aficionados looking to enrich their portfolios with a piece of Bordeaux history that’s sculpted by time, now would be opportune. The 1999 vintage encapsulates an era at Chateau Margaux - one where nature posed questions and ingenious human touch provided eloquent answers. This Pavillon Rouge stands as an embodiment of endurance and flair, making it another esteemed chapter in the anthology of collectable Bordeaux.

An excellent Second wine. Rounded blackberries and violets on the nose. Quite forward on the palate with toasty black fruits. Medium-light tannins. Very perfumed with succulent finish. A superb Pavillion Rouge. Tasted March 2000.

This is an estate where the quality of the second wine is more than a simple afterthought. The 1999 Pavillon Rouge de Margaux exhibits notes of herbs in its elegant, medium-bodied, forward, complex personality. It possesses the character of its big sister, but not the weight, concentration, or length. Enjoy it over the next decade.
