2004 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux from Chateau Margaux, Margaux, Bordeaux

The 2004 vintage in Bordeaux was one of precision and elegance rather than power. This is particularly evident in the 2004 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux from the venerable Chateau Margaux, a vintage with distinctly vibrant, ripe characteristics that became increasingly endearing as it matured.

A Study in Elegance: The 2004 Vintage

The 2004 Pavillon Rouge captures the essence of a Bordeaux year that emerged triumphant over initial scepticism. Critics anticipated a modest showing for the region; however, upon closer examination and patient cellaring, the wines, including this noble second label from Chateau Margaux, have beautifully defied the odds.

The wine presents an alluring bouquet of blackcurrant and violets, accompanied by a refined earthiness and whispers of oak-induced vanilla. Open this bottle today, and you'll find that age has graced its structure with finesse rather than futility.

Terroir and Texture: The Hallmarks of Pavillon Rouge

On the palate, the 2004 Pavillon Rouge is a seamless blend of Cabernet Sauvignon's austerity with Merlot's sensuality, complemented by notes of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The texture is where this wine sings: poised between youthful tenacity and graceful maturity, yielding layers that invite contemplation.

This vintage constitutes an excellent addition to fine wine collections for investors seeking out under-the-radar gems that promise rewarding evolution. Its finesse and supple structure are trademarks of not just its distinguished producer but also reflect the thoughtful viticulture of Bordeaux’s 2004 growing season.

Connoisseurs' Joy: A Timeless Bordeaux Investment

As one unfurls the layers of the 2004 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux, one will find that it stands as an exquisite exemplar of its terroir. This vintage underscores why seasoned investors cast a keen eye over these quieter Bordeaux years. It is those vintages that often yield unexpected delight, coupling mature grace with enduring substance; indeed, a poetic testament to both winemaker's artistry and nature's serendipity.

This is a really lovely Pavillon Rouge, the nose having really blossomed since I last encountered this wines. Very pure with slightly earthy black fruits but with outstanding definition. Blackberry, raspberry and just a hint of coca. The full-bodied palate is very well balanced, still nascent and perhaps a little unresolved but gradually developing a sensuous, silky mouthfeel. A touch of smoke on the finish, this is fresh, surprisingly complex Pavillon Rouge that needs a little more time, but should have a long future. Drink 2010-2020. Tasted July 2008.

Margaux’s second wine, the 2004 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux, may turn out to be outstanding. Its deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by fleshy notes of black currants, cherries, smoke, earth, and spring flowers. Lovely, ripe, and opulent, it is best consumed during its first 10-15 years of life.
