1998 Grand Puy Lacoste

By Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste

1998 Grand Puy Lacoste from Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

In the rich tapestry of Bordeaux vintages, the 1998 Grand Puy Lacoste stands as a testament to the resilience and grace of Pauillac's terroir, notably in a year that presented considerable climatic challenges. The heralded estate, Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste, with its expanse of prime vineyard land dotting the landscape of Pauillac, has drawn from this challenging vintage a wine that strikes a remarkable balance between power and finesse.

An Exemplar of Patience and Potential

Although 1998 began precariously with damp conditions that threatened the usual flourish of Cabernet Sauvignon, a transformative Indian summer allowed for late ripening which imbued the grapes with intense concentration. In this particular iteration, one finds an elegant choreography of mature blackcurrant notes intertwined with whispers of cedarwood and a savoury complexity that only time can bestow.

Upon tasting, it is evident that the 1998 vintage encapsulates both the structured framework typical of Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste together with the nuanced bounty proffered by nature's capricious hand. This fine equilibrium is further enhanced by tannins that have softened consummately over the years, crafting an expressive bouquet on the palate which concludes with a finish of admirable length and integrity.

Investing in Poise and Prestige

Fine wine investors will recognise in the 1998 Grand Puy Lacoste an asset of poised elegance and evolving complexity. Signifying maturity in its evolved hues and aromatic depth, this vintage presents not merely a desirable acquisition for collectors, but a splendid opportunity for those willing to indulge in the profound pleasures that only well-aged vintages from esteemed terroirs can provide.

Considering its journey thus far, and factoring in storage conditions which have been meticulously maintained to ensure optimal ageing, the 1998 Grand Puy Lacoste still promises potential for further development. It beckons to both connoisseurs and investors alike as a dignified emblem of one of Bordeaux's most revered appellations.

The astute wine aficionado knows that among vintages resting gracefully in cellars across globe, there lies hidden treasure—and within such cache resides the 1998 Grand Puy Lacoste from Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste—a resplendent gem waiting to be rediscovered.

Tasted at the château, the 1998 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has really developed in commendable fashion in recent years. It had a striking bouquet with intense blackberry, wild strawberry and graphite scents, a vivacious bouquet that is less austere than other vintages. The palate is very well balanced with a smooth texture. Like the aromatics, I feel this is more approachable because its backbone is not as "stiff". The salinity on the finish tempts you back for another sip of this hidden gem of late-nineties Bordeaux. Tasted July 2016.

The 1998 reveals a classic creme de cassis-scented nose along with powerful, tight, firmly-structured flavors. While moderate tannin is present, there is more than enough extract and depth behind the tannin to support the enthusiastic rating. However, this wine needs 3-4 more years of cellaring, and should keep for 16-18 years. This is a top-flight claret.

Tasted at the chateau, this has a ripe, almost sorbet-like nose with floral overtones, violets and rose petals complementing the succulent strawberries, loganberry and red cherries. The palate is fleshy, seems to be more Merlot-dominated at present, but certainly full-bodied, with great depth for the vintage. Ripe, saturated tannins towards the finish that is bursting full of bright black cherries and briary. Great length. A lovely '98 that still needs another 3-5 years before becoming approachable. Tasted April 2008.
