The Defining Characteristics of 2001

The year 2001 was cooler compared to the scorching 2000, bestowing upon its resultant wines a structured precision. The 2001 Grand Puy Lacoste articulates this virtue adeptly, with its poised tannins and classic cassis notes deftly entwined with hints of cedar and spice—a testament to the extraordinary terroir of Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste.

On the palate, one is greeted by a medium-bodied ensemble, allowing a vibrant acidity to carry through flavours resonant of dark fruits and tobacco. The subtlety of oak integration here is noteworthy; it frames rather than overpowers the fruit.

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On horizontal. Showing some maturity on the rim, this has a very opulent bouquet with degraded fruit: crushed strawberry, pomegranate, chestnut, a touch of toffee and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight meaty edge on the entry, fresh acidity here, firm grip with a savoury touch on the sweet, fleshy finish. Very fine, though I am surprised I forward this bottle showed. Tasted March 2011.

A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by this property’s tell-tale cassis characteristics. Medium-bodied and monolithic, with fine ripeness as well as depth along with light to moderate tannin in the finish, the 2001 Grand-Puy-Lacoste should be at its peak between 2006-2014.
