The 2007 Grand Puy Lacoste from Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste manifests the particular climatic idiosyncrasies of its vintage with admirable finesse. This Pauillac stands as a testament to the vineyard's resilient character, in a year that presented its share of challenges—with an uncharacteristically warm spring followed by a rather cool summer and an uneven September adding to the vigneron's conundrum.
Distinctive Elegance: A Testament to Terroir
Despite the vagaries of 2007, this vintage reflects the deep, gravelly soils and the deft touch of Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste's winegrowers. The wine exudes a finesse that defied the year's inclement episodes. It opens with an aromatic bouquet highlighted by spiced plum and a tease of tobacco leaf, intricately woven amidst subtle cedar undertones.
Investment Merit: Refined Resilience
The palate is where 2007 Grand Puy Lacoste affirms its singularity—revealing a structured yet supple profile, layered with mature blackcurrant, and hints of earthy complexity that leave investors and aficionados appreciating its surprisingly robust composition. This Bordeaux blend demonstrates how expert nurturing coaxes out resilience and balance from even the less-celebrated vintages, offering a wine with not only a narrative but also commendable ageing potential—a criterion paramount in the calculus of fine wine investing.
Moreover, the tannins, once firm, have evolved into smoother accompaniments to the wine's softened acidity, suggesting that 2007 from Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste now sits in an optimal drinking window. Investors would be astute to consider how this stage of maturity aligns with both their portfolio strategies and palate preferences.
To conclude, for those seeking a sleeper vintage with a story of triumph over terroir's tribulations, the 2007 Grand Puy Lacoste from Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste is an investable proposition. Its current evolution presents a sophisticated composure that belies the temperamental backdrop from which it emerged—demonstrating that even in years less fawned over by critics, treasures await discernment.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has a straight-down-the-line, no frills, pencil lead-infused, black-fruited bouquet with wonderful definition and commendable intensity for the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with a surprisingly lithe and sensual opening, more red fruit than other vintages of Grand Puy Lacoste with satisfying precision and mineralité on the finish. This is excellent. Tasted February 2017.

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. This is a better showing of Grand Puy Lacoste 2007. Here, it has a well-defined, vivacious, pointed bouquet with bright red-berried fruit, redcurrant and cedar. It is a little pinched at first, but it opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, quite plush opening, good acidity, generous fruit for the vintage with a supple, lithe, caressing finish. Fine. Tasted January 2011.
