1997 Lynch Bages
By Chateau Lynch Bages
1997 Lynch Bages from Chateau Lynch Bages, Pauillac, Bordeaux
In the tapestry of Bordeaux vintages, the 1997 Lynch Bages from Chateau Lynch Bages displays a distinct character that defies the challenge posed by the year’s climatic inconsistencies. Known for its robust structure and harmony, 1997 was a vintage that promised an early drinking window due to its more approachable nature.
Bearing Witness to the Vintage's Singularity
The later part of the decade was a period of dichotomy for Bordeaux. In 1997, milder conditions led some chateaux to grapple with achieving opulence in their wines. Despite nature's caprice, Chateau Lynch Bages chiselled an exception; this Pauillac marvel is imbued with the poise that followers of this reputable estate have come to relish.
A Timepiece of Terroir and Temperament
Celebrated for its profound tannic architecture, the 1997 Lynch Bages is a testament to skilful vineyard and cellar management under uneven skies. One beholds a bouquet where cedar notes dance amidst blackcurrants and earthy undertones, a prelude to a palate where maturity meets vivacity. The balance struck between ripe fruit and acidity in this wine is precise, enabling it to unfold with grace over time, revealing the patina of age without forfeiting freshness—a hallmark of commendable vinification.
As both a wine critic and a firm believer in bespoke wine investment strategies, I find the 1997 Lynch Bages to stand firm among collectible vintages. While it may not possess the longevity of its more heralded counterparts, it offers a cherished window into the nuanced world of Pauillac at a stage where maturity bestows its gifts upon the discerning enthusiast.
To conclude, navigating through the variegated landscapes painted by different vintages leads one on an intriguing journey with each sip. With its singular attributes placing it rightly within the sphere of fine wine investments, the 1997 Lynch Bages encapsulates a refined snapshot of its genesis, providing wine investors with an opportunity to capitalise on a vintage that captures both the splendour and subtleties of Pauillac terroir.

Ex-cellar bottle tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical. This has a superb nose, very lifted and well-defined, cedar, blackcurrant, smoke and a touch of burnt toast. Just soars from the glass. The palate is full-bodied, ripe tannins, beautiful balance and poise with a sense of controlled opulence towards the finish. It comes across very natural, black cherries, blueberry, a touch of orange zest. This is certainly an over-performing wine for the vintage and shows better than previous bottles, although it did fade a little when returning after 15 minutes in the glass. Drink now-2015. Tasted September 2009.
Neal Martin - Wine Journal Mar 2010
This wine is jammy black currant fruit intermixed with cedar wood, herbs, spice, and pepper. It is a light-styled yet friendly effort with creamy new oak, low acidity, and a medium-bodied, attractive albeit superficial appeal. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.
