Chateau Lynch Bages Lynch Bages

2002 Lynch Bages

By Chateau Lynch Bages

2002 Lynch Bages from Chateau Lynch Bages, Pauillac, Bordeaux

The year 2002 was one with testing conditions, yet one that the outstanding Chateau Lynch Bages surmounted with grace. This vintage, in stark contrast to the more affluent 2000 and comparatively plush 2001, stood firmly on the foundation of its tactical viticulture and precise vinification.

A Study in Resilience and Finesse

What sets the 2002 Lynch Bages apart is not an opulent character but rather its display of elegance amidst adversity. The growing season in Pauillac was challenging, with a cool summer and uneven weather leading up to harvest. However, the expertise at Chateau Lynch Bages ensured that only the finest fruit was selected, resulting in a wine that speaks less of excess and more of balance and depth.

Subtle Complexity: A Connoisseur's Vintage

In the glass, this claret presents an ensemble of subtlety and complexity. There are refined layers of cassis, interspersed with nuances of cedarwood and cigar box – typical hallmarks of a classical Pauillac aged finely. Though not as muscular as some counterparts from riper vintages, the 2002 Lynch Bages should be lauded for its astute representation of terroir under whispered duress. It possesses a poised structure that promises further evolution in bottle, making it an intriguing proposition for fine wine investors looking for longevity paired with the finesse only a chateau of this calibre can render.

Consistent with my previous encounters with the wines from Chateau Lynch Bages, the 2002 vintage carries its family's reputation forward – reflecting both the challenges of the year and the triumph over them through skilful craftsmanship. If one is seeking a Pauillac that articulates both resilience and understated charm – truly indicative of its terroir – this vintage should not be overlooked in any sophisticated portfolio.

For collectors and aficionados alike, 2002 Lynch Bages embodies an investment in nuance over bombast, showcasing how even less heralded years can yield gems worth savoring – and indeed worth sipping slowly into maturity.

Tasted blind at Farr's 2002 Bordeaux tasting. This marks a better showing for Lynch Bages, this bottle retaining the austere, stoic facade but behind it more evidence of blueberry, iodine and violets. Good lift with an undercurrent of sous-bois. Very ripe entry, chewy tannins, blackberry, boysenberry and graphite leading to a dense, dry introverted finish. Tasted October 2009.

Bell pepper, cigar box, red as well as black currant notes, dusty, earthy tannins, and a medium-bodied personality make for a good but uninspiring effort. Drink the 2002 over the next 5-10 years.
