By Chateau Lynch Bages
2008 Lynch Bages from Chateau Lynch Bages, Pauillac, Bordeaux
The 2008 Lynch Bages from esteemed Chateau Lynch Bages encapsulates the quintessence of an iconic Bordeaux vintage, underpinned by a narrative of climatic adversity ending in triumph. This particular year in Pauillac was marked by dichotomous weather patterns that challenged vignerons; however, the resilient spirit of the vines mirrored that of the winemakers, culminating in wines that are as compelling as they are capricious.
A Study of Resilience and Precision
The unyielding efforts at Chateau Lynch Bages have borne fruit in their 2008 vintage, which stands as a testament to meticulous cultivation and vinification in a year that demanded nothing less than exactitude. An early spring frost led to anxious moments, yet the subsequent temperate bloom promised redemption. The summer swung dramatically from cool to hot, forging a crop with tight clusters that matured gradually, as September sun drenched the Pauillac appellation with much-needed warmth.
Investment-worthy Meritage
Harnessing this rollercoaster of a season, the 2008 Lynch Bages exhibits a profile that is both assertive and elegantly structured—a melange of cassis and tobacco jazzed up with hints of graphite and delicate spice. Tannins, having mellowed out after years of repose, now lend a silken grace that hints at further potential for enigmatic evolution—a key aspect for wine investors considering longevity and maturation trajectories.
This offering from Chateau Lynch Bages suggests a investment calibre wine that finds its strength in its vintage-specific rigour. One might argue it benefits from both the seasoned wisdom imparted by an initially reticent growing season and the vivacious energy of an 11th-hour flourish.

Wonderful purity of fruit here with flowers, clean fruit with strawberries and currants. Full bodied with fine tannins and floral and fruity with ultra fine tannins and elegance. Give it four to five years.

A sensational effort for the vintage, this textured, opulent, superb Lynch Bages is already strutting its stuff and should easily last for 20 years. Medium to full-bodied with an opaque dense purple color, notes of flowers and cassis, a layered texture that builds incrementally in the mouth and tremendous purity and depth, it can be drunk now or cellared for two decades or more. Bravo!

Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. The Lynch Bages 2008 is very well defined on the nose with more red instead of black fruits, graphite and sous-bois intermingling with touches kirsch and cassis. This is a little showy compared to previous bottles that I have encountered. The palate is well balanced with a little hardness on the entry, understandable at this stage. Quite tight at the moment, nice freshness with a long tail on the finish, this is a fine, upstanding, conservative Pauillac. Tasted January 2012.
