By Chateau Pontet Canet
1986 Pontet Canet from Château Pontet Canet, Pauillac, Bordeaux
The esteemed 1986 vintage from Château Pontet Canet proffers a profound lesson in the timeless interplay between nature's whimsy and the vintner's prowess. In a year when Bordeaux was blessed with conditions that hovered near ideal, it is this bottle from Pauillac that summons the discerning investor to take fuller notice.
A Year of Rigour and Reward
The 1986 season in Bordeaux presented vintners with challenges that were met by rewards in equal measure. A rather rigorous winter gave way to a temperate spring, setting the stage for uniformly healthy vine growth. It’s the summer’s consistent heat and a near-perfect September for Cabernet Sauvignon that carved the destiny of this vintage with precision akin to the finest craftsman's chisel. The hallmark equilibrium in weather patterns was a boon for late ripening grapes, particularly in the gravelly soils of Pauillac, creating a vintage with remarkable ageing potential.
A Terroir-Driven Tapestry
This 1986 Pontet Canet delineates itself with an opulent structure, undeniably derived from its illustrious terroir augmented by the year’s climatic generosity. The tannins, mellowed yet assertive after decades in repose, frame a cavalcade of dark fruit, tobacco and cassis notes, bringing forth a depth of profile that is both enigmatic and assertive. The subtle intrusion of earthy undertones and pencil lead elegantly compliment the ensemble, revealing a domain where power meets finesse.
For the astute wine investor, separate from Chateau Pontet Canet’s usual allure, it is the clarity of maturity found within this particular bottling that offers a compelling narrative — one where longevity and consistency of character are not merely hoped-for ideals but tangible assets.
Growing Gracefully: Investment Potential
With each passing year, the 1986 Pontet Canet unveils new layers of complexity, unfurling an ever-evolving bouquet that has not reached its zenith. It stands as a testament to Pauillac's resilience and radiance, encapsulating a particular moment in oenological history with graceful fortitude.
In conclusion, Castro Wines commends to investors the 1986 Pontet Canet as an exquisite exercise in endurance. Not only does it possess an enviable pedigree from Château Pontet Canet but also substantiates itself as an intricate statement piece for any serious collection — confirming that with time comes revelation and refinement.

Scores and tasting notes
This wine still remains relatively young, with a dark plum/garnet color, an intriguing nose of black currants intermixed with compost, earth, and a hint of mushroom. The wine is dense, muscular, tannic, and very masculine. The tannins seemed slightly elevated for the concentration, but there is a lot going on here. This wine certainly saturates the palate, but will it ever come into complete harmony? Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015. Last tasted, 9/02.
