2000 Domaine de Chevalier from Chateau Domaine de Chevalier, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux

The millennium vintage from Bordeaux, venerated worldwide for its exuberance and harmony, ushered forth some impeccably structured wines. Chief amongst these is the 2000 Domaine de Chevalier from Chateau Domaine de Chevalier, a specimen of enological finesse marrying claret tradition with an exceptional year.

Millennium Majesty: A Vintage for the Aficionado

An oracle of viniculture, the 2000 offering from Chateau Domaine de Chevalier stands as a testament to the virtues of ageing, ensnaring the attention of both collectors and connoisseurs. Excellence arose in this vintage from a prodigious interplay between steady climatic conditions and the astute handiwork at the estate. The carefully nurtured terroir of Pessac-Leognan, blessedly embraced by that season's benevolent weather, imparted deep character to its yield. With a sophisticated blend predominately of Cabernet Sauvignon supported by Merlot, one experiences in their glass a tapestry of impeccably ripened fruit woven with refined tannic strength.

Oenological Odyssey: A Palate's Pleasure

Time cradles this remarkable vintage, tenderly unfurling its complex character. The 2000 Domaine de Chevalier greets with an olfactory bouquet that marries blackberry and cassis with subtle hints of smoke and earth—a poised introduction to a palate graced by plush dark fruit tones edged delicately by smoky oak nuances. The interlude of age has orchestrated the softening tannins to support a silhouette that lingers confidently on the finish.

The astute collector seeking a robust wine investment strategy should note the favourable performance trajectory typical of such esteemed vintages from Bordeaux. One might suggest that including the 2000 Domaine de Chevalier in one's portfolio would not only bolster financial horizons but also promise potential sensory dividends upon maturation

In summation, this is a vintage resplendent with potential—a reverent nod to both its ancestral lineage and the open-hearted generosity of its birth year. This is indeed a collector's beacon and an oenophile's delight; such depth and grace seasoned by time are rare finds within Continental vineyards. A taste journey through which history whispers amidst its complex layers—a distinguished inclusion for those discoursing in investments en primeur.

This offers a complex nose of sweet tobacco and stones, with red fruits such as plums, as well as a smoky note on the nose. Full and juicy, with a tobacco and berry character that turns almost tea like on the finish. This has medium tannins, and is just starting to come around. Still needs another two or three years to open, but this is already nice. Pull the cork after 2013.

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index's 2000 tasting in London. This is much more backwards on the nose, more reductive in style, rather flatter and less vivacious. Leathery black fruits and a touch of wild mushroom. A clean entry on the palate, rounded red-berried fruit, a touch of earth and tobacco, linear and straight-laced, lacking a touch of complexity towards the finish. Returning to my glass, it coalesces and exudes elegance rather than power. Poised and feminine. Drink 2012-2025. Tasted March 2010.

Abundant notes of sandy, loamy soil, forest floor, black currants, cherries, and unsmoked high-class cigar tobacco jump from the glass of this complex, perfumed Pessac-Leognan. Medium-bodied and lighter than many 2000s, it has resolved all of its tannin, and appears to have reached full maturity. This wine has such superb balance that I suspect it will last another 8-10 years.
