Characteristics Distinctive to the 1997 Vintage

Emerging from Pessac-Leognan, a region celebrated for its gravelly soils that impart complexity and longevity to its wines, the 1997 Bahans Haut Brion possesses a distinctive profile. During this particular year, the weather gods presented challenging conditions - an early frost followed by a relatively cool summer. Yet, it was these very difficulties that fashioned a vintage embodying freshness and balance rarely found in more opulent years.

In this wine's composition, one discovers a harmony of soft tannins and an amiable acidity that leads to fruit-forward notes caressed by time. The terroir speaks through whispers of tobacco and earth amidst the predominant plum and blackberry tones.

The 1997 Bahans-Haut-Brion exhibits a dark ruby color, as well as a subtle mineral, tobacco, earthy, black plum and currant-scented nose. Light tannin is present in the finish, but this is an up-front, hedonistic wine to drink during its first 7-8 years of life. A severe selection was employed for the grand vin at Haut-Brion, with only 45% of the production making it into the final blend. Only 35% of the remaining production went into the second wine, Bahans-Haut-Brion.
