By Chateau Haut Brion

1999 Bahans Haut Brion from Chateau Haut Brion, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux

The 1999 vintage brought forth a particularly notable harvest for the esteemed Chateau Haut Brion. The estate's offering, the 1999 Bahans Haut Brion, hails from the celebrated gravel terraces of Pessac-Leognan and stands as a testament to the season's gentle generosity. With an autumnal progression marked by temperate days and crisp evenings, this year’s yield found itself ensconced in conditions that allowed for slow maturation and impeccable acid retention.

Refinement and Elegance: A Matured Investment

Sojourning through the portfolio of Chateau Haut Brion, one often encounters wines of formidable structure and longevity. The second wine of the estate, Bahans Haut Brion, now known as Le Clarence de Haut Brion, undergoes a gentler maturation process yet maintains an impressive complexity. A ripe constellation of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc shapes its core, with each varietal contributing layered depth to this vintage.

Climactic Nuance: The 1999 Vintage Hallmarks

The proverbial whispers among connoisseurs suggest that the Pessac-Leognan terroir articulates its voice most expressively in moderate years such as 1999. Indeed, this Bahans Haut Brion sings with a temperate voice of soft-spoken fruits; cassis and plums pirouette amid whispers of earthy licorice and wisps of smoky oak that have been gracefully integrated over time.

In investing terms, the 1999 Bahans Haut Brion presents itself as a prudent choice for enthusiasts seeking mature Bordeaux wines with immediate approachability. Its current drinking window offers a fascinating glimpse into how the gentler vintages from storied producers still promise poise and sophistication on the palate.

The articulate finesse of the 1999 Bahans Haut Brion from Chateau Haut Brion can only be extolled further when considering its standing within an investor’s cellar. This edition carries an elegance that has gracefully withstood the tests of time. Despite not emerging from the most lauded vintage, it nonetheless embodies a charm that is undeniably Haut Brion—marked by balance, cultivated tannins and an enduring finish that resonates with an investor’s palette for both quality and heritage.

More elegant than Chapelle but without the depth. Nose is closed. Good firm grip on the palate with cherry, liquorish and cranberry notes. A charming wine with breeding. Tasted March 2000.

The black cherry, plum, and mineral-scented 1999 Bahans Haut Brion was somewhat closed aromatically when I tasted it. The wine has medium body, excellent purity, good texture, and firm tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015.
