Refinement in a Challenging Year

Nevertheless, the astute team at Chateau La Mission Haut Brion harnessed their profound connection with the terroir to produce a stellar example of their craft. This demonstrates that in the hands of consummate experts, even less heralded vintages can give rise to wines with considerable allure and complexity.
Complexity Amidst Contrasts
Indeed, the 2007 La Mission Haut Brion provides a fascinating study in contrasts. It delivers an olfactory bouquet brimming with smoky notes and a fruit-driven core that intermingles cassis with hints of earthy underbrush — a characteristic reminiscent of more classic years. The initial impressions on the palate might suggest a leaner structure, which belies an evolving depth that reveals itself gracefully over time. Finely knit tannins and a poised acidity contribute to its notable persistence and its propensity for evolution in the cellar.
For the discerning wine investor, this vintage represents an intriguing proposition: it is a wine that commands respect for its finesse in expressing the variegated facets of a Bordeaux blend under testing conditions, whilst offering a narrative thread that connects earth, vine, and human artistry.

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. The La Mission Haut-Brion 2007 has very good fruit intensity on the nose: well defined, graphite, cedar and ebullient black fruits. There is immense breeding here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a touch of austerity, very composed and refined with an elegant, graphite tinged finish with a touch of cracked pepper on the aftertaste. This is a sophisticated La Mission that in blind conditions just pips Haut-Brion. Re-tasted at the chateau the following September with consistent notes. Tasted September 2011.
Neal Martin - Wine Journal Nov 2011
The 2007 La Mission Haut Brion, a candidate for wine of the vintage, exhibits a dense ruby/purple hue along with notes of melted licorice, blueberries, cassis, burning embers, and charcoal, sweet tannin, medium to full body, a fleshy mouthfeel, and an endearing succulence as well as lushness. Already appealing, it should continue to evolve and drink well for 15+ years. It is a great success for the vintage.
