By Chateau La Fleur Petrus
2004 La Fleur Petrus from Chateau La Fleur Petrus, Pomerol, Bordeaux
The year 2004 in Pomerol was marked by a growing season that challenged vignerons with its capricious nature. Despite some climatic trials, the meticulous efforts at Chateau La Fleur Petrus have culminated in a vintage of notable expression and finesse. The 2004 La Fleur Petrus emerges as a testament to the resilience of the terroir and the indisputable skill of the winemaking team.
Intricacies of an Unfaltering Vintage
As we delve into the layers of this admirable Pomerol, one is immediately struck by how elegantly the 2004 La Fleur Petrus has matured, contrasting with some of the more opulent years that followed. It presents an intricate tapestry of ripe red fruits laced with earthier undertones, hinting at truffles and wet forest floor – an olfactory enchantment that only this storied appellation can proffer.
The palate reveals disciplined tannins and a structured composition, thanks to an extended maceration period which was judiciously monitored – a choice vindicated by the wine's splendid evolution. The merlot's plush plum and blackberry notes are finely tethered by the cabernet franc's suggestion of pencil shavings and subtle spice, painting a complete picture of this slightly cooler year's harvest.
A Decade On: Reflections and Revelations
Two decades since its inception, the 2004 La Fleur Petrus continues to shine within Chateau La Fleur Petrus' illustrious catalogue. For investors eyeing wines with grace and longevity, this vintage stands out as an understated yet compelling proposition. Within this bottle lies not just a beverage but a narrative woven through time – a story of struggle, perseverance, and ultimately triumph. Each sip offers a nuanced insight into Pomerol's cherished terrain during an unassuming year that discreetly provided the potential for splendour. Collectors take note; this 2004 vintage presents not just drinking pleasure but an opportunity for discerning investment as well.

Ooh - I like this. A very ripe, complex nose of black fruit, tobacco and burnt toast. A ripe, tannic palate with good fruit concentration. Balanced and harmonious. Moderate grip. An engaging wine with an irony finish. This will be fascinating to taste after bottling. Great potential. Again in London in the same month. A very fragrant nose of ripe black fruit and tobacco. Very intense. The palate has great definition with ripe, black fruits and sturdy tannins. Blackberry, here a hint of liquorice. Moderate grip and quite irony on the finish that has very good length. An excellent Lafleur-Petrus. Tasted April 2005.
Neal Martin - Wine Advocate - Wine Journal
Performing better from bottle than it did from barrel, this is a classic, elegant La Fleur-Petrus (in contrast to the blockbuster 2006) offering hints of kirsch liqueur, soy, and resiny pine forest notes. Elegant, medium-bodied, fresh, and pure, it is best drunk over the next 14-15 years.
