1990 Le Pin from Chateau Le Pin, Pomerol, Bordeaux

Distinguished for its rarity and eminence, the 1990 Le Pin from Chateau Le Pin has carved out a prestigious niche among Bordeaux enthusiasts. This particular vintage resonates with me profoundly due to the exceptional conditions of the 1990 growing season – a year that was graced with idyllic weather, promoting an impeccable balance of ripeness and structure in the grapes.

A Vintage Defined by Prodigy and Poise

The Pomerol appellation of 1990 stands as a beacon for collectors and investors alike. Within this esteemed region, Chateau Le Pin contributed a stellar performance with its 1990 vintage, characterized by its sumptuous richness and profound complexity. The wine is a cerebral affair; an exquisite expression of Merlot with a poignant depth that has evolved magnificently over the decades.

Climatic Serendipity Crafting Inimitable Elegance

The growing season's temperate but sunny disposition carried through to an unhurried harvest, allowing grapes on the tiny estate of Chateau Le Pin to reach their full potential. This serendipitous orchestration of climate translated into a wine that intertwines opulent fruit profiles with earthy truffle nuances which have become more pronounced as the wine matured.

The palate is introduced to an enlivening display of black cherry and currant, interwoven with subtle hints of tobacco and spice culled from its time in oak. With tannins that have softened over time, yet remain assertive, this vintage stands out for both its immediate appeal back upon release, as well as its commendable evolution – a testament to its storied provenance.

In summary, the 1990 Le Pin from Chateau Le Pin represents a paragon of investment-grade wine. It captures the essence of Pomerol's exceptional terroir in a year that was particularly benevolent. As it continues to enchant the palates of connoisseurs worldwide, this rarefied libation reaffirms its stature as one of the most illustrious wines from Bordeaux. For those seeking to invest in a vintage that emblemizes both an extraordinary year and legendary viniculture prowess, one need look no further than the 1990 Le Pin.

The 1990 Le Pin has more in common with the 1982 than most wines of this vintage. This wine exhibits concentrated fig, blackberry, creme de cassis, kirsch, roasted coffee, herb, and spice box characteristics, and incredible amounts of glycerin as well as velvety tannins. Still tasting like an adolescent, it rocks and rolls across the palate in a glorious manner. Anticipated maturity: now-2025. Release price: ($5000.00/case)

Tasted at Bipin Desai's Le Pin vertical in Los Angeles. Not tasted since the millennium, this remains an outrageous Pomerol to die for. Decadent and ostentatious on the nose with sweet cassis and blackberry fruit, creme de menthe, hot bricks, a faint hint of cloves (not as much as the '89) and utterly seductive. The full-bodied palate has layers of exotic, ripe black fruits, cooked meats, a touch of menthol and just a hint of VA. Incredible level of concentration and yet it is not blowsy and poorly defined in any way. It coats the mouth with its lascivious charm. Oh la la! Lovers of 'classic' Pomerol will abhor it, but it actually resembles the Petrus '90 more than I predicted. Try to taste this just once in your life! 700 cases released. Drink now-2020. Tasted November 2008.
