2004 L'Evangile

By Chateau L'Evangile

2004 L'Evangile from Chateau L'Evangile, Pomerol, Bordeaux

The heralded Pomerol estate, Chateau L'Evangile, beckoned the discerning palates of connoisseurs with the release of the 2004 L'Evangile. This vintage emerged from a season etched by a capricious climate, requiring the deft touch of a master vigneron to harness the potential of Merlot’s refined opulence and Cabernet Franc's structural verve.

A Study in Precision: The Climatic Challenge

The 2004 vintage in Bordeaux was not without its drama; an initial mildew threat in June gave way to a glorious summer, which imbued the grapes with richness before an unpredictable September prompted an early harvest at Chateau L'Evangile. The estate's strategic vineyard management and precise timing resulted in a harvest that captured the essence of Pomerol's terroir while circumventing the late rain's potential to dilute.

The Quintessence of 2004: A Pomerol Paradigm

Tasting the 2004 L'Evangile reveals a palette on which Mother Nature has painted complex layers of ripe blackberry, truffle, and earth. The tactile presence of fine-grained tannins elegantly supports this structure, whilst nuanced strokes of spice highlight the artistry of the blend's composition. Over time in the glass, this wine unfurls like a well-versed narrative brimming with wisdom accrued from each sip.

This is no run-of-the-mill claret but a Pomerol with pedigree; the 2004 L'Evangile exhibits balance and elegance that stand as testaments to both skilled winemaking and a resilient terroir. The investment appeal lies not just in its distinguished heritage but also its robust ageing potential. A judicious addition for collectors seeking to embellish their portfolios with a wine radiating poise and complexity.

A Worthy Pursuit for the Astute Investor

Two decades have allowed this exemplar to integrate and evolve, now showcasing tertiary characteristics poised magnificently at their apogee. A bottle of 2004 L'Evangile from Chateau L'Evangile is both a triumph over climatic adversity and an emblematic benchmark for investors questing after wines with both maturation capacity and immediate charm. It resonates with depth akin to Pomerol's most regaling offerings from more vaunted years yet holds its own as a triumph of quiet victories over nature's challenging caprices.

A stunning example of the vintage, the 2004 l'Evangile is not far off the pace of their brilliant 2005. A blend of 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc (3,000+ cases produced), it exhibits a deep ruby/plum color, superb ripeness, and sweet blackberry, truffle, acacia flower, licorice, and toasty oak aromas. This knock-out effort is surprisingly rich, opulent, and fruity with good glycerin, medium to full body, and a stunning finish. It should drink beautifully young yet age for 15 or more years.

This is leaner on the nose than the 2008, touches of undergrowth, blackberry, cedar...almost as if there is a little Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (which there is not.) The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, just a little coarseness, quite foursquare towards the finish.
